You are so right!!! TERRIBLE !!!!!

reply

I disagree. I liked how slow the film was....it allowed you to get to know the main character, and see how sad she was living in L.A. As the film went on, it built up a sense of dread, and you knew it would all hit the fan.

For those who don't like films like this (and other slow burns, a la "House of the Devil"), I don't understand why you enjoy seeing someone get stabbed every 5 seconds in a horror movie. After the first kill, the audience gets used to the killing and there is no shock value. Here, the audience is taken down the road with this girl and the sense of dread builds and builds, setting the movie up for a stunning conclusion. That is how horror should work.

I would give the movie an 8 out of 10. The sound was a little off, but it was done on a super tight budget, so I'll forgive it. Good job guys. Very good film.

You are spot on, Nikkogino.

I also appreciated the slow burn (see my post here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1918806/board/thread/199257432?d=199257432 #199257432) and "House of the Devil" is a terrific comparison.

reply

Agree on the most part. This film isn't 'slow'. In every shot there is a hint of terror that plays on your everyday paranoia.

I think this film is well thought out and perfectly constructed.

The only problem is that it is hard to put into a genre and by being labelled 'horror' can give viewers the wrong idea of what to expect.

I would go so far as to give this film 9/10 as I thought it was intelligent and masterful film-making.

reply

I wouldn't call it MASTERFUL film-making. That's being excessively hyperbolic. But it does have it's moments & the last act makes the film worthwhile.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

reply

Actually I'd say that last scene is borderline 'masterful'. It's all in one take - like 15 minutes long. Very well done....

reply

<< it does have it's moments & the last act makes the film worthwhile. >>

That's when the film lost it, for me. I don't mind screen violence...but the film up till then I thought had done a good job of implying the heroine was imagining the threat and perhaps coming unglued. But then it just descends into "He's In the House With You!!!" and any deeper creativity dries up. On the other hand, I'm obviously out of touch with this film because the directors' and critics' commentary never suggest the threat is in the heroine's mind...so I layered a plot on it it didn't even have.

Oh well.

I think the main reason for that is that this film was *beep* while people being killed every few seconds is mindless entertainment. As it happens I don't like either.

reply

i hate when people say that. have you seen "manos, the hands of fate"?, "birdemic"?, "actium maximus"? if not, then you haven't seen the worst movie ever!!

reply

Was it really that bad? Stephen King gave it a glowing review in the August 31 issue of Entertainment magazine. I was going to try to get it on DVD from the library.

its not bad, its just different. just because its slow and subtle, doesnt mean it isnt good. the subtleness is the whole point of the movie. it is supposed to creat the illusion of safety and security, until stuff inevitably goes wrong. its called a slow boil.

reply

ms_sunshine, I thought this film was awesome!

reply

God, this was awful, and the pretentious plot description isn't really helping, either.

reply

... but it's still pretty bad.

Shame on those who rate this highly.

reply

It's incredibly good, but idiots with no taste will hate it.

If you like Ti West's stuff, you'll love this.

This really sneaks up on you and I hate myself because it does!

I know you are but what am I!

reply

Even comparing this film to Ti West's work is an insult to Ti West, if such a thing was possible. At least the "heroine" in House of the Devil TALKED, had a personality (if the not most likeable one)... this character just combs her hair in front of the mirror a thousand times a day and whenever she walks down the street she gets hit on or followed (yeah, a real Bridgette Bardot this one is... my arse). Bad casting. Bad acting. And even more importantly, bad writing. It's as if there was no script to begin with!

If you want to watch some very good "slow burn" type films I'd suggest Hitchcock or Polanski... but their films are more than a decade old so you'd certainly have never heard of them anyway.

If you can ASSume, well then so can the rest of us, Mr. Genius with so much taste... LULZ.

Just sayin'...

Shame on those who expect everyone to be as closed minded as they are.

House of the Devil is a great slow burn horror movie. This however sucked and the ending was laughable and not disturbing at all.

exactly just because they are both slow doesn't mean they are of equal quality. I loved House of the devil but this is just atrociously boring.
