Beyond stupid? I thought it was kind of a sweet thing to do. Karen was just downright rude, someone made a nice gesture towards her and she threw it back in their face.

Can't you see that Karen didn't ratted him out. The office was over staffed and the boss wanted to sort his employees. He found out a company policy broken by Frank and Bam! He attacked. He specifically told Frank not to talk to Karen as he might loose the shoulder over which he was shooting the gun.

I nearly got in serious trouble for making a truly harmless joke because a woman who over heard it got deeply offended. By what I do not know. Even the boss thought it was ridicules but I had to be "talked to" anyway just "because".
