Green Day doesn't suck

Although I agree with a lot of what the characters complain about in this film, I think they went a little too far on critisizing the "Green Days" as they called them. They're an awesome punk rock band. Sure most of the NEW rock music sucks but GD came out in the early nineties, so they're not that new. So if the movie had been longer, were they gonna go start shooting rockers listening to Green Day??? come on.

reply

Green Day wasnt too bad when they started. But their new stuff geared towards Top 40 audiences is terrible.

They've been terrible longer than they have been alright.

Therefore: Suck.

reply

Yeah Green Day kinda sucks these days.

Green Day is pop-punk GARBAGE. Fans should be set on fire, then put out with a shovel.

Green Day is a type of fast food of music. Some people will argue that they like McDonald's over Burger King or others claim that Subway is better than Pizza Hut. But in the end, it's just some easily consumable product. Pop bands essentially make 3-minute commercials and they sound good, because they're supposed to sound good by design... "good" being similar to everything else you've seen before. It's not artistic, it's patterned and "catchy".

Is there anything wrong with Green Day or other pop bands like that? No. I don't think so myself. But not everyone has to like music just like not everyone is a foodie. Some people like being tourists instead of travelers. Some people like blockbusters over indies. But if Green Day is your favorite band, just admit that you don't like music all that much.

I wouldn't put the fire out, let 'em burn! The Green Days are frigging awful, always were, always will be. If they are punk, then No Doubt is death metal.

These? days? I can't name one band from 1990 onwards that isn't a pile of *beep* Rock musicianship died in the 1990s, at least in terms of what was mainstream. The 70s and 80s were full of great rock. The thing that irks me about Green Day is that they're so not punk rock it hurts. They're a pop band, and always have been.

It wasn't musicianship that made rock great or relevant. The Beatles were a horrible live band. They only got good at live shows after they went solo. The Stones didn't get good at live music until the early 1970s. It was the rebellion of them that struck a cord.

As for good post-1990 mainstream bands: STP, NIN, AIC, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Nirvana, Black Crowes, Blur, Verve, Oasis, Radiohead, Faith No More, White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Strokes, Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Slut, QOTSA, Interpol, Black Keys, Arcade Fire, etc. etc. etc.

But if you want really good music, go underground. That's were it's always has been. And yes, Green Day is terrible. They're responsible for Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, New Found Glory, McFly, Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, etc.

Green day rocks, Nimrod is a great album that never gets old. This movie was trash.

reply

I don't think they're terrible too. Hopefully that's not the point in the movie. I wished this movie went deeper then what it could have been.

reply

So if a band isn't doing great at the time means they suck?? Some people's logic makes no sense. They made classic tunes like Basketcase and longview i'm sure you've rocked to American Idiot. They're *beep* awesome. Screw Bobcat Goldwaith.

reply

Roxy was old school and into Alice Cooper, so for her there was about 30 years worth of bands that suck.

Sorry, never liked these guys. Always sounded like pop-punk crap geared towards Hot Topic shoppers. I agree with the movie. I always liked harder-edged stuff, so I'm sure when they came out and MTV told you they were cool, you bought it.

reply

You're abso-fvcking-lutely adorable.

reply

I don't think they "suck", but there's something about their sound I just don't like. I would tend to say that they're too "loud", but that doesn't make much sense considering I grew up with bands like AC/DC, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Judas Priest, and still listen to them.

I think, in my case, it's something about the tone of their music that I don't like, if that makes any sense. Sorta gives it too much "noise".

But I don't think they suck. I reserve that word for those with little to no musical talent.

I will add that I never cared for Billy Joe Armstrong's voice.

reply

Green Day sucks, they have one song style and every song sounds the same as their others.

I stopped reading when op said green day is a punk band...

Hehehe! Me too.

Green Day isn't what original punk, it's more pop punk. Even though the sound, ideas, and themes are similar as to that of "real" punk bands. People just don't consider them punk because they're mainstream, which is stupid. The Ramones, Sex Pistols, those are mainstream. So, those "punk rockers" out there, please explain to me how Green Day is different. But be intelligent and objective, don't just say Green Day sucks. Because you sound like an idiot.

And their new stuff is great. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown were strong, cohesive, thematic albums.

That being said, I don't care that the movie made fun of Green Day. It was a great movie, and I understand where they were coming from. This thread is kind of stupid.

Green Day is just a ripoff of Stiff Little Fingers ... so they suck by virtue of ripping on someone else's music
