A few plot questions???

There's a few questions I have about this movie.

For one, when that one guy and the old Scientist have to get the water to fill up near the end of the movie, why did the Scientist guy even have to die going in that drain? After the guy went down and turned the handle, he stood there for quite a while right next to the ladder going right back up without even get hit by the water. The other guy could have easily jumped down and turned the handle and jumped right back out and shut the door in the time that scientist stood there and no one would have had to die.

Also, I don't get the ending. What was shooting water into the original holes have anything to do with stopping the storm and the growths and all? Already the water from the ocean had already been sucked into the hole and did nothing in the first place so why would this water from a hose be any different?

so you're not questioning the logic of even having a manual valve in such a place where you would die if you ever needed to turn it. that was beyond stupid.

it was heavy water which the 16 year old daughter deduced would stop the storm from spreading (precocious teenagers are apparently great at saving the world), they tried to spray the clouds with heavy water with the helicopter which crashed but the old scientist ran a computer model which predicted it wouldn't make any difference putting the stuff in the clouds and he realised (guessed) that pouring the heavy water into the crash site would work instead, it made no sense why pouring heavy water into the crash sites would immediately stop the stuff that was already in the atmosphere.
