Other similar anime?

I really loved this series, not just for the great sci-fi plot, but I loved the characters and the writing. I've been looking for similar anime to this, something modern, with great characters and mature dialogue similar to this. This anime felt more like a drama/thriller than anything else, and I really enjoyed it. It was a nice break from the over the top, often silly, anime I'm used to watching.

So are there any anime with similar characteristics as this show, possibly set in Tokyo? Or is this anime simply unique?

PS the anime I'm currently watching: Baccano, Naruto, Psycho Pass, and Akame Ga Kill, none of these are really similar to Steins Gate though 😩

I've only watched a few anime series so far, but I think Death Note might fit your criteria. However, it's a lot darker than Steins;Gate, and not remotely as humorous.

I loved Death Note, that was actually the first anime series I ever watched in full. I got a recommendation for Welcome to the NHK which is ok. I've just been wanting a more mature anime, nothing explicit, just something intriguing, logical, and geared more towards adults.

I just finished Steins;Gate. Mind=blown. When I was watching it I thought how similar it seemed to "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni". If you haven't seen that, def check it out! The first few episodes will seem pretty bizarre but keep watching- it will eventually all make sense :)

Why not continue watching the other entries in the ; series? There's Chaos;HEAd which I liked and don't understand why a lot of other people didn't like (please don't give me the "but the VN is soooo much better!" because I'd rather watch 12 episodes than have something that goes on for a super long time. There's also Robotics;Notes which I have only heard some good responses of, but it isn't highly rated on IMDb. And finally, coming out sometime soon on simulcast is Chaos;Child which will be the anime adaptation/sequel of Chaos;HEAd. There's three to choose from.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is probably the closest thing you'll find.

Get a few episodes into it, and you'll see what I mean.
