Who else would you want to see?

I really liked the first one, with the exception of Gervais. I've never liked Ricky and he really ate up way too much talking time. Having Seinfeld there really gave it a interesting balance with a wide range of comics. Other comics that I thought could make a good talking funny would be: patton oswalt, jim gaffigan, lewis black or bill maher.

Patton among the funniest working today and really represents a new kind of breed while Gaffigan has been much more established. Lewis Black and Bill Maher are only politically charged. I'd love to see them talk about different approaches to comedy.

I know most people hate Dane Cook (I don't really have an opinion), but it would be interesting to see him on there, just to see how other comedians treated him. It really seems like an exclusive club that comedians live in.

Gervais has two more ideas:

Talking talk (with talk-show hosts, Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart and Letterman -he is not going to do it-) and Talking Show-runners (with, I don't know, maybe his pals J.J. Abrams, Larry David, Greg Daniels or Tina Fey).

I would love to see these come to fruition.
talking talk would be great if he can't get letterman Leno is just as good (they're both pretty awful)

i think we can all agree that we don't want ricky mod'ing this one.

I feel like Talking-Show-runners could be really good, because you could get people that would really want to dive in and talk about the minutiae of creating a show. Talking talk would be tough because other than O'Brien or Ferguson (maybe Stewart) I don't see people wanting to open up much (Letterman) or just not having anything interesting to say (Leno or Fallon). I've seen Leno on segments of car shows where the host literally just goes around Leno's wearhouse and asks him about his projects and Leno seems cold and detached and uninterested, and this is his love!

I also think Gervais could add more to Talking Show vs. Talking Funny, because The Office WAS a great concept and execution whereas Gervais really isn't a stand up with Seinfeld, Rock, and Gervais. Though, Gervais would probably hog even more time on that show.

Id want to see Eddie Murphy, because hes classic. He may not be funny now, but neither is Seinfeld. Dave Chappele, even though he rarely does stuff, Richard Pryor but hes dead, I like louis, Chris. And I think Bill Cosby would be interesting

id like to see talking talk. stewart already agreed to it, conan will surely agree too, and letterman already turned him down.

its kind of hard to get a gamut of styles without leno, there just would not be as much contrast.

conan, kimmel and (maybe...probably)stewart grew up idolizing letterman. i know they are different in style. conans quirky/silly and stewart treats serious stuff (no matter how much he yammers on that its inconsequential), but they come from the same school... leno approaches it in a very different manner. always safe, never boundarypushing nor trying new stuff.

fallon and ferguson could offer a new perspective, but fallons too "green" and ferguson is not big enough i guess.

my pick would be stewart, leno, letterman and (obligatory...ly) ricky.

as for a sequel to talking funny. i think norm macdonald, steven wright, cosby for the token black conventional comedian and ricky would be nice

While your list of others to consider doing this are funny people, the vibe has to be right for them to talk seriously about their art. Some comics and writers are always "on" and doing any sort of intelligent discussion with them isn't that useful. These four guys didn't feel the need to perform and only did so to provide an example or reference point to the discussion.

youre right. i guess maybe steven wright woulndt work. ive heard norm talking comedy and he can really open up and leave the lazy stupid character to have a serious conversation.

i just picked them because of their styles and to have part two be a little different. rock and seinfeld might not be the same but they are conventional comedians. norm is longwinded and not a jokey comic, steven is a "weird" oneliner master and cosby is very clean and a legend (also, black).

who would you want to see?

I'd like to see a show like this done with Garry Shandling, Larry David, Eddie Murphy and David Letterman.

reply

I was waiting for somebody to suggest Gary Shandling. In fact I was kind of wishing that Shandling was there during 'Talking Funny.' He is after all, a show-runner much admired by Gervais AND an accomplished stand-up comedian. Larry David falls into the same categories and his jaded take on stand-up (he seems like he hated every second of it) would be a really interesting fit.

I loved this HBO special and I also would like to see more.

Personally I would like to see a conversation between Ray Romano, Larry David, Kevin Hart and Stewart Lee.

Kid on bike "Where you going?"
Charlie Bright "Somewhere".
