They're Jews, not WASPS okay?

The top 6 billed characters are ethnically Jewish, the top 7 of 9 are if you count the next 3. Just because they have white skin does not make them WASPs just like me getting a tan doe not make me a Latino. This a movie about rich Jews, quit grouping everyone into skin colors. It's an ethnicity. Get with the millennium.

Well it's pretty obvious that although most of main characters the ARE Jewish, the characters and the place this story takes place in seems to emulate the WASP idealism that even Irish-Catholics aspired to 80-plus years ago.

Being Jewish is being part of a religion, not an ethnicity---people tend to get that confused all the time. Some Jewish folks are just average white people, regardless but Jewish people come in all colors, in case you didn't know. And what difference does that make whether they're Jewish or not?

reply

It doesn't make a difference. But the first posts I've seen are talking about "white people problems," which is basically insinuating that all 'white people' are rich and live fantastic lives free of real problems. White people apparently, are so rich, that a bad tanline or a broken nail are the biggest problems they'll ever have to face. That opinion right there is extremely bigoted.

Oh, and I think the other post is also wrong. Look at the names of the characters, Ira Miller, the Goodmans, Rabbi Cohen, Matt Kazanoff, and both the elder and younger Carson are played by Jewish actors. The movie is also written and directed by a Jewish man, whose only previous film is about Hasidic Jews.

HERE IS MY POINT: It's not to bash Jews. It's not to troll or bash any posters. I just think that when people see this movie and say "Oh, just some more rich white people" they need to realize they're actually referring to Jewish people. However, they wouldn't DARE say, look at these rich Jews. So they safely rag on ole whitey. Similar to Donald Sterling, the bigoted owner of the Clippers. He became 'just another rich white owner of an NBA team. Hey did you know MOST of the owners are rich white men?" In actual fact, most of the owners are rich white Jews. Now if you point this out, as I am, people's knee jerk reaction is to call me a bigot. All I'm doing is letting you know there is a difference. If you look at white people as a whole, the majority of them are NOT rich. The Jews have a word for non Jews, goyim. So THEY accept there's a difference. People ARE of different cultures and backgrounds, and there's nothing wrong with that, but quit lumping in ancient Semetic cultures to Victorian age European cultures.

As a Jew, I disagree. We are both a religion AND an ethnicity. I know lots of Jews by blood who may identify as being Agnostic or Atheist as far as religion is considered, but they will still say that they are Jewish.

reply

Good point. AND Jews have only been considered 'white' in the US since 1956. They were their own racial category before that.

His Jewishness DOESN'T matter, but why should his whiteness? Why isn't Donald Sterling simply a bigot. Why is he an evil rich WHITE man? Seems like when certain people like George Zimmerman or Donald Sterling do something to inflame another race, they suddenly become 'white.' Whitey always takes the blame. How come we don't say, Hilter killed 6 million white people in the Holocaust? Here we make the distinction. One of the main things Donald Sterling mentioned in his bigoted rant, was black people in Israel and how black Jews were different than white Jews. So even HE mentions his own Jewishness.

The idea of jew-as-race is a trap to keep those who lose faith from fully leaving the flock.

reply

That's the problem with the idea of being Jewish. When you want to make an argument about ethnicity, you use the ethnic definition of being Jewish. When you want to make a religious argument, your use the religious definition, of which there is more than one. When you want to make an argument about nationality, especially when talking about Israel and the Middle East, you use a definition depending on national identity. Apparently, Muslims and Arabs want to kill off all kinds of Jewish people.

I think a lot of people find the terms ethnicity and race to be interchangeable. They aren't... Race itself isn't really a good term because to most peoples' eyes, it just means color ie) white, black, Asian. Doesn't tell you much.
