I just watched it and I echo your thoughts, but with a bit different emphasis. The rash of unplanned pregnancies are the root cause, if only there were a way to put a dent in that. I know it first hand, one of my daughters at 20 had an unplanned pregnancy, married the guy, it never had a chance to work. While we love our grandson our daughter's decision at 20 to have sex with a guy she hardly knew and without protection has saddled her for the rest of her life and since then has gone through a series of unsatisfying temporary relationships. It always seems to be the female part of that dynamic that suffers the most, yet young girls never seem to see that far enough in advance to prevent the situation.
And the fictional story here mirrors real life quite well, even though the 16-yr-old knew exactly what had happened to her mother at the same age she willingly jumped into a similar situation, and that certainly happens all too often.
