Holly and Jenson still in there, or mindless corpses?

Were they zombies? I.E. dead inside but animated flesh? Or were Holly and Jenson still themselves and just driven insane?

I think to some extent they were inside because when he (the monster) picks himself (the future him) up, he kind of stares at him for a little while he screams and then just like drops him. Where as with the other guy, they just kill him instantly.

It seems like they had some retention of their former selves...but just a little. They did know enough not to kill their present selves, only to herd them towards that was inevitable.
