Look at Elvis Presley at 40, or 42 -- he was a wreck. Then look at Burt Lancaster or Kirk Douglas at the same age, and older, and they were magnificent. So was Cary Grant, Jane Fonda and Esther Williams. 40 is whatever it may be for whomever is that age. It's not old, isn't over the hill and goes for less nowadays than ever before. I'm sure Elvis would loved to have seen 50 and Bruce Lee would have been remarkable at 40, but it wasn't to be. But we certainly can't turn the clock back, so the most positive alternatives have to be the best.

Every single one would give everything they own to be in a 20 year old body again (well, they'd want to go on being rich and famous, obviously).

Looking young and being young are two entirely different things. Age has its compensations, but Bernard Shaw wasn't kidding when he said youth is wasted on the young.

If you eat your greens, go easy on the booze/fags and eat more white meat than red you will definitely look better at 40 than if you do the opposite of all that.

As for the character herself, even if she's still attractive at 40 she knows that she's divorced and there are plenty of younger models in the singles market so being lonely (she clearly is) she's conscious time isn't on her side to change all that.
