For those that did not understand some or most parts.

I think that those who did not understand some or most parts of the movie, and I think that equates to about everyone, should re-watch Rubber, made by the same director in 2010. There is a lengthy anecdote in the beginning that explains the whole thing.

Is that at the beginning in rubber where that guy says something like 'all of the things in this film will not make sense and have no meaning'. ?

Didn't like Rubber and I'm currently watching the end of Wrong and I dislike it just the same. It's way too farfetched even in movie terms.

It’s not meant to be remotely plausible so “farfetched” is an irrelevant criticism. It’s meant to be totally random and absurd and it is. Sometimes that worked (Dolph, Master Chang, “top level” detective Ronnie and the surly cop who changed his mind about getting on the bus) and sometimes it didn’t (the gardener and the pizza girl, although they both had their moments, and Dolph’s job and co-workers). If you have no tolerance for absurdity—and a lot of intelligent and discerning people do not so I'm in no way making a value judgement about that—this guy’s films are never going to entertain you. There’s ample ground for criticism but the fact that a plausible suspension of disbelief is tortured to death in the opening moments is not a valid one in the case of a film like this.

I can deal with absurd... Tim and Eric are my favorite. But this was just bad-absurd.

I definitely cannot blame people for not liking it because it is not a traditional film in any sense. I would, though, warn anyone that has laughed at a 21st century Adam Sandler film to stay clear of this movie. There is nothing here for you.

reply

Wait, there's actually people that have laughed at an Adam Sandler movie made in the last 10 years?

reply

Absolutely agree - particularly the reference to Adam Sandler types!

So you hate David Lynch films?

Exactly. When I watched "Rubber" I didn't like it but acknowledged the idea of making a movie about random stuff without any sense.

But now the director basically did the same thing again. While there were a few scenes/dialogues that made me smile, I did not care much for the movie at all.

I think it's pretty lazy filmmaking always hiding behind the premise and idea of "nothing in the movie makes sense. It's supposed to be that way" so nobody can criticize the script. I mean you can make tons of movies like that, but what for?

I'm gonna stay clear of future movies by this director.

Well I think there are metaphors...like the dog represents his submissive mind (obey like a dog), meaning the guy's lost his mind, he's a rogue agent, and he's trying to get his sanity (dog) back.
The police are traditionally a symbol for the restrictions we put on ourselves...
Driving in the middle of the desert for a long time is like refusing to look at reality, going on and on in one's mind but getting nowhere.
etc...
