not all movies are meant to entertain

Such a disappointment to see all the negative reviews. It only shows what a distaster the movie business has become. Don't get me wrong, I love a good formulaic thriller or romantic comedy..In spite of the blatant sexism, I appreciate the smooth production, exiciting pace and emotional manipulation of films like Black Swan.

But those films represent a very narrow scope of what film making is and can be. Please, if you plan give this movie anything less than a 6, preface that review by saying:

" I apologize, but I am infantile and expect movies to breast feed me a predictable storyline, or at least a storyline that is a easily solvable and exciting little puzzle that has absolutely no consequence on real life or real people. I also need emotional comfort. Movies must manipulate me with dramatic images and soundtracks that are exciting, non-threatening and ultimately lead to a clear sanctified resolution. All characters should eventually be classified as good or evil. Last, there are only 3 female characters in any movie: Mother(any older caretaking female), Good girl(wife, sister, friend), Bad girl(whore, addict, etc). I hate this film because it meetd none of these requirements and because.....(insert review)"

This film actually felt a little bit like Black Swan, albeit a less melodramatic, if much less entertaining and cinematic version. set in Off-Broadway theatre instead of ballet and with Winona Ryder in the Natalie Portman role (and perhaps James Franco in the Mila Kunis role)

Or maybe I'm only saying this because they're both about a woman going schizo, set in NYC and feature Winona Ryder (and also have a woman getting hit by a car)

I realize I'm a little late to this thread, but I just saw this movie today. I gave it more than a six. Specifically, I gave it a seven. I also read some posts by someone who gave it a ten, and I at least understood most of what he was talking about (depiction of developing schizophrenia, blurring the the lines between fantasy and reality, etc). I spent most of this movie trying to understand what was happening, but I least I got the impression that something was, in fact, happening. Not the sort of thing I want to watch all the time, but I am glad I watched it.

I wanted to add that this movie reminded me of another I watched a long time ago. It took me this long to figure out which one it was: Jacob's Ladder (1990). That one had a bit more action, but the basic weirdness was there.
