After a STRONG start, the show seems to be treading water... not too late to recover, but I have my worries. Has anyone read the book... was it worth it?

There are rabid fans of this book just as rabid as Star Wars or APPLE fans. Well, maybe not APPLE fanbois, they're insane. LOL

The book was great. Season 1 was great. Season 2 was iffy. Season 3 they seem to have abandoned the premise and are focusing more on slavery and racism. There's nothing wrong with shows that address that but in this case it's starting to feel like a woke bait and switch because the basic premise of gods that are sustained by belief is falling to the wayside. It just feels hijacked.
shareIt definitely seems more character driven rather than plot driven which in my view is less of a winning formula here. I agree with you that the magic was in the premise, so a shame that has fallen more to the background in favor of meandering story lines.

I happened to read it shortly before the series started which turned out to be a problem for me. The images in my head from the book did not match the on-screen characters and after 1-2 episodes the dissonance was too great so I had to give up. I always intended to try again but not got around to it yet.
