Hanezu vs Tree of Life

Both films on nature and cosmos, that The Tree of Life was favored over Hanezu bespeaks the now banality of Cannes and the part of the film industry that it represents.

I didn't see The Tree of Life (and I won't, because something with Brad Pitt in it cannot be good, imo), but I didn't like Hanezu. It seems to me that the director had ambitious plans but was not able to fulfill them.

You're limiting yourself. I used to do that, too - before I realized that people like Brad Pitt, though they do some terrible work, are capable of magnificent work also. Tree of Life is definitely one of those times.
I had the same issue when Lars Von Trier's Melancholia - Kiefer Sutherland because of his torture advocacy work in '24', and Kirsten Dunst...because. You know.
But boy am I glad I forgot that nonsense - they were brilliant. Perfectly cast.

Eh?
Tree of Life is hardly banal. You may not like it, but for many, it's a brilliant film, on many levels.
And this bizarre victim nonsense about the industry - grow the hell up. Terrence Malick is hardly Hollywood or 'the film industry' for goodness sake. He's an independent film maker. He's very much the type of film maker that Canne has always been receptive towards. Nor is he some kind of mafia-like industry figure able to sway the people who vote.
Like most of his films, Malick, was not financed by a studio.
The actors put in, as did people who've been involved in his projects before. But not who you appear to want to be behind him. Not Warner Bros or Fox.
Sorry.

I liked TTOL more. Hanezu is 6.5 for me, and The Tree of Life 9 out of 10.

I like to watch.
