My impression is that kissing was done off camera, just as dancing, going to dinner or movies would happen. This was a standard formula of films from other decades: activities were implied off camera. It occurs in many films today that are for adult audiences.

Some actors are not going to demonstrate all that happens in life because those aren't the films they will sign. There are many films and television shows in which the stories are so well written and acted, that people will swear they saw more than what was on screen, simply because of how well things are implied. One's imagination takes over and fills in the blanks.

This is why people can be terrible 'eye witnesses'. : )
