wow another white male "Christian" abusing women...

hey look it's another movie about a sexually deviant as a Christian preacher/clergy/reverent/etc., who preys on young women (or boys) blah blah blah...

For ONCE, just ONCE, why not make a movie with a similar story-line, except this time have a MUSLIM IMAN, sexually molesting young boys (Which they do, and it really happens)?

Not that I have any interest in that sorta tortureporn, but bc for some reason it seems the Muslim community gets a pass on ANYTHING associated with a negative stereotype. Just break the mold, for one time.... you know what will happen? You'll have protestors up and down the streets citing this is inflammatory towards Muslims, etc.

Sorry, but it's laughable how Hollywood will go to great strides to not "offend" certain groups, while others are constantly the antagonist.

#staywoke

full disclosure - I was deployed, my brothers deployed, my dad, and it's a pretty common practice for the "head" of a village/tribe in the Middle East to have a "house boy" that is there for a number of services. Yet they stone and torture LGBT there, omg the irony.

This is a town in the old wild west. The whole town is not gonna follow some brown guy as an authority figure and hang on to and listen to his every word.  It's just not believable. He wouldn't have passed the paper bag test to even be let inside the town. Kit Harrington would have ran him out of there. Dakota Fanning's character certainly wouldn't have entertained the thought of even being in the same room as him, let alone let her child be influenced by him as a moral authority.

They'd have to change the whole setting of the movie if you want to do it with different characters. Um...nobody in the US wants to watch a movie set in the middle east with an all Muslim cast, especially main characters. There aren't any movies with middle easterners as heroes, or even sidekicks. So what are you beetching about? There's hundreds of movies where a white guy is a main character and not a preacher. Like pretty much all of them, for example. Do you think a terrorist movie will sell more tickets than a cowboy western? I swear people on imdb are ridiculous sometimes.

How did you get through reading The Scarlet Letter in high school English class without flying into a rage and feeling like a victim? I mean, that book was written in 1850 and it's about a white woman heroine who gets treated like crap by male preachers lol. This movie with Dakota Fanning is pretty much a retelling of Scarlet Letter.

relax bro, you seem a lil upset... Um yea, so what I'm suggesting is why doesn't H/wood make a movie based in the MD.East, not change a Western to have a lead Arab role. That's not even plausible.

No, I actually thought S.Letter was aight in HS, never re-read it though.

Honestly, can you name a movie where the lead antagonist a is Muslim clergyman, who is a sexual deviant?

....

go ahead, I'll let you google it now, bc nothing will come to memory.

There are plenty of movies made in the Middle East (made by Arabs themselves) starring Arab and Muslim folks who aren't terrorists, and there are some indie Arab-American films you can look up, too. Also Hollywood is well known for making films for years where, until recently, Arabs and Muslims were always portrayed as literally nothing but bad guys and terrorists. To claim that Muslims "get a pass" in Hollywood movies is pure BS.

Also, Christianity as a religion isn't so perfect that it can't be criticized, like any other religion. Haven't seen this film, but it sounds like its main point is how some people have used religion as a shield to hide their evil deeds behind throughout history, and to get away with certain things. The fact is, there are psychos, nutcases and perverts in practically every religion who use it as a cover to do their dirt---and that's everywhere. It's not exclusive to Islam, or any other religion.

Western market is predominantly Christian or lapsed, regardless the market is pretty familiar with Christian history.

Setting a movie with themes, characters, events that western audiences are familiar with makes it more marketable, as it is more relatable for the audience.

Foreign cinema, even when it apes western style, usually has so many cultural differences it rarely appeals to westerners, barring the odd exception.

Getting mad that they're bashing Christianity yet again is understandable, however rather than seeing it as a Hollywood elite attacking theism, you could see it as Hollywood lacking the backbone to try something truly new, instead making movies by committee and ticking boxes

Another poster wrote this review:

A grimly beautiful film about an upsetting yet very relevant subject matter, Brimstone uses the Western genre in a way that is rarely seen; as a somewhat realistic portrayal of the hard living and suffering on the frontier, told from the female perspective. There is a mythic element which brings a much darker, almost supernatural aspect to the narrative which in its non-linear order allows for a more original point of view, brought to life by brilliant performances. If only the film didn’t play its hand a little too forcefully towards the end and fall too much into genre tropes. http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/lff-2016-brimstone/

Uh, seriously? Lots of Americans watch and like foreign films (like I do) even if they're a small amount---that's why a lot of foreign films come to the U.S. all the time. Just because you don't watch them, that dosen't mean nobody does. That's a huge uniformed assumption on your part.

"Why not make a similar story-line with a MUSLIM IMAN sexually molesting young boys?"

Because that is not the society we live in. Hollywood, the US, the western world make a predominantly judeo-christian society, which by the grace of Enlightenment has developed into a secular society in which the Church and the State are separate entities. Thank god.

We don't make many buddhist movies either, here in the western world; nor do we contemplate the virtues or vices of hinduism or sun-worshipping in our literature. If someone wants to make a movie about a sexually deviant imam (not iman), it will probably be a (former) muslim.

That is not Martin Koolhoven. You can't take it ill of a Dutch guy from The Hague and the catholic province of Brabant that he doesn't tell a story about the fringe islamic world. It would not be interesting.

In the mean time, we criticize and mock our christian heritage. Please see that as a virtue, not a vice. It is the best we can do - and our clergy deserves it every bit. Did you read about the number of young victims of catholic priests in Australia last week?

You want to shed an equally critical light on islam? Fine with me. Let's put our hopes on some critical (ex-) muslim for that.

reply

Are you kidding? No films show muslims in a negative light? Muslims are shown almost exclusively in a negative light in films and will usually be shown as terrorists.

reply

That's because 99% of the terrorist attacks the world over are by radical Islamists, e.g. 9/11, Orlando, San Bernardino, Chattanooga, Fort Hood, Boston Marathon, Paris, Nice, etc.

reply

Not all terrorists are Muslim, or even Arab, for that matter. DO some research, please.

reply

I never said "all" nor did I mention Arabs; I said 99%.

Even if it's half of that figure, it's not a good reflection on Islam.

reply

99% is damn near all of something. Which means you're just guessing without any actual statistics. Look up some actual stats to back what you said up.

reply

I wrote that post 2 years ago and gave some of the more glaring examples of Islamic terrorism in the US and France -- 9/11, Orlando, San Bernardino, Chattanooga, Fort Hood, Boston Marathon, Paris, Nice, etc., all of which have resulted in the mass murder of myriad innocent people.

Now consider my most recent statement -- "If Islamic terrorism is even half of 99%, it's still not a good reflection on Islam." Also consider the fact that "99%" is merely a hyperbolic figure, which suggests that the vast majority of extreme terrorism is committed by radical Muslims. In other words, it wasn't a technical, exact figure, yet conveyed the general truth.

In all fairness, he may have called himself a Christian but he was no man of God. He was pure evil.
