Why is Daisy so unlikable?

Did the Daisy in the book behaved as rude as the Daisy in the beginning of the movie?

in my experience she was just a typical american abroad

reply

I actually don't know anybody that would be that rude or bratty to family they've just met and were allowing her to stay in their home. So I would hardly say she's the typical American abroad.

Even by the end I thought she was still really unlikeable, she just happened to be in love and had motivation to get back to him. I think people that liked her probably just like the actress and therefore wanted to like the character.

I'm from the U.S. and the vast majority of our teenagers do NOT act like sociopaths, especially when visiting family. Daisy was a despicable character. Most female teens here find her behavior and attitude abhorrent. However, it does give me pause that some people think our teens are like that. *shudder*

I guess Daisy's an extreme stereotype based on our trashy celebrities and dumb TV shows. Most of us can't stand them either!

I am American, too, and I have seen my fair share of girls behaving badly. Daisy's angst, IMHO, is not an "American" thing. I would think any 15 or 16 year oldgirl from a free society would have a lot of bad feelings from being ignored and, (as Daisy sees it), betrayed by her parents.

reply

So-called "angst" is not peculiar to Americans, but they have a unique way of showing it.

She is really angry with her father when the film starts. She feels like he doesn't have time for her or want her around, so he shipped her to England. She's taking that anger out on everyone when she arrives. Your'e not supposed to like her at the start.

She is a teenager...? Need anything else?

reply

Having been sexually assaulted has made her hard.

I liked her, though.

reply

hungry_ghost, where do you get "sexually assaulted from"? was that in the book?

reply

Nope, it wasn't.

reply

Because she was only ever happy when she was getting some from her cousin. Otherwise she was intolerable.

reply

She was a sullen, teenage girl suffering from a neglectful father and guilt over her mother's death.

The movie is how she grows from brat to strong, independent, caring, young woman-and it succeeds.

She clearly had a psychological condition like borderline personality disorder or something. The voices in her head and her taking pills on a regular basis made that pretty clear.
