"I used to love her but I had to kill her"

reply

and a pretty nun,what a pity

The original post doesn't even make sense. Are all nuns the same in your view? (rolls eyes)

reply

She's devoting her life to others because she thinks the did a horrible thing when she killed her trainer.

The image of a nun is a virgin frump. Modern nuns can devote themselves to God or charity........and STILL live a life.

My high school history teacher was a former nun who left the church and got married after she fell in love. She's in her 80s now. What were you saying about being a nun again?

reply

The OP has a valid point. A nun could choose to leave the church and lead a normal life, but they wouldn't simply have a fling and then go back like she did. Nor would she have been forced to be a nun because she was sent to a convent. Being sent to a convent doesn't mean you are going to be a nun. Some girls are sent to a convent, and then at a point they arrive at a fork in the road where they can choose to be a nun or not... that woman in the film had already made that choice, so there wasn't going to be a hell night and then back to being a nun.

reply

She wasn't forced. She actually explained it. She chose to be a nun. She was young, led a sheltered life, underwent years of sexual AND psychological abuse, wracked with guilt over killing him, and thought that the only way to earn forgiveness was to go into the church.

It was only when she became an adult that she started having second thoughts. Because if you recall her confession, she acted like it was all her fault. Because that was really how she felt. And that was what drove her to do her vows.

More importantly, the nuns in the convent she was sent in probably never even knew her past. If they did, they would have never let her join, because it was all for the wrong reasons.

reply

She clearly states in the movie that they decided not to throw her in jail. Instead they sent her to the convent. I doubt they forced her to become a nun, but going to the convent was her punishment for killing her trainer. That much was made very clear in the movie.

I'm getting confused about what we're arguing about again. I know they didn't force her to be a nun, I also know that they did force her to be put under the care of nuns.

But when she became a nun (at 16 or 18, I forgot), she was still very young. Still very sheltered, and still tortured with guilt about what she had done.

When I say it was only when she became an "adult", I meant when she finally understood from an adult's point of view, that what the guy did was wrong and that he deserved to die.

She let go of her guilt which was the primary motivator for why she became a nun. Because remember that she wanted to be a ballerina, not a nun. Without the guilt holding her to her vows, she's having second thoughts about remaining a nun. And finding herself being attracted to Statham... well... who can blame her if she wanted to live a little? I know that nuns aren't exactly hermits nowadays, but there was still one thing that she can't ever have by taking the vows, and it was also the one thing that she has never experienced in her life - romantic love.

reply

They both had their moment of happiness and then it was time to pay the piper. For her it was to banish herself deeper into the convent and he (presumably) will be caught and tried for his crimes. But in the end they were at peace with themselves which is what I felt it was about. It was never going to end well, it was just a matter of meeting the end well.

reply

Exactly, tntales. Too bad this board doesn't have more posts recognizing the comparison between the soldier and the nun. It's the parallel that makes the movie extraordinary.

jimakros,

Nothing to do with the writers. Do you think that no nun, living as a nun
has ever done wrong or committed a sin in the eyes of her faith?
If that is the case, you are very naive.
