This was originally meant to be shot in black-and-white but A24 shot down the idea.

West pitched it to A24 early in the making of X, and tried to make Pearl as financially feasible as possible. So he suggested shooting in black and white, because black and white cuts costs. For instance, “if a wall is the wrong color, it’s just gray now, we don’t have to worry about repainting it,” West explains.

But A24 executives already had a handful of recent black-and-white releases, and told West they weren’t necessarily interested in funding another. So he told them: “The other idea I have is to go all in on the other direction and go full-on Technicolor-inspired, almost like a Disney movie.”

I haven't seen it yet but I think it would have been cool to shoot it in black and white, especially since it takes place in the 1920's (or around that time). Black and white also could be very creepy.

I was just setting up color controls and watched a few clips from the movie, doesn't really look as good as the color. I'm glad it was shot in colors.

wait, i thought a24 was all about pushing director-controlled and creatively driven projects?

That's why I posted this. It comes as a bit of a surprise given the perception everyone has of them as a company.

i always figured that a24, with more and more financial hits, would eventually grow into a major studio driven by business decisions and less by creativity. this is where it starts.

When studios actually make the right decision.
