Oscar worthy? seriously? The acting was poor, cinematography was very amateur, the plot was convoluted and lacked depth and clarity and don't even get me started on the direction. The film was most of the time all over the place and finally, neither was the film's topic imo, bold nor groundbreaking. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but Atif Aslum is not an actor, i do believe hes a pretty good singer, but that does not automatically make him a good actor.
Acting goes much deeper than the recitation of a few lines of a badly put together script. Acting is about Progression of the character, or in easier terms character development, an infamous example would be that of Al Pacino in the godfather. Acting is about versatility, the ability to hide your quirks and disappear into anothers personality completely. Now Look at Gary oldman or Geoffery rush,i wont even start on legends like marlon brando or robert duvaal, they are examples of real actors.
I'm not scrutinizing this film on its own merits, because locally speaking this is a breakthrough, much better than most of the trash that has plagued our cinemas recently. But Oscar Worthy? Most Definately Not. It would take any film in this region another decade or so, to reach the academy's standards, but i'm afraid with raunchy dance sequences and uncalled for cliche's we are heading no- where. People here are very naive, when it comes to filmography. I mean seriously how many people do you come across that have watched the likes of raging bull and Apocalypse Now, not many, that is why people suggest appalling creations such as bol deserve oscars.
As for the Oscar for best foreign film?...Umm no. The films made in europe and places like mexico are far more sophisticated and in every way much more superior to the trash that is made here. Films voted for as the best foreign film are sometimes even better then the film that has won the oscar for best picture that year, so this is not a category to be taken lightly. Example being Pans Labrynth, and a notable mention would be the french masterpiece Amelie'.
I agree asian films are disregarded almost all too often, like the seven samurai, but films made here don't deserve that sort of respect
So all in all, my opinion, with regard to all the points that i mentioned above, is that this movie has a snowball's chance in hell of any oscars, if you know what i mean, or world wide praise for that matter. The fact that many local individuals that can't tell apart trash from art, call this a masterpiece and say it is oscar worthy boggles my mind.
