My thoughts on the ending (Spoilers, obviously)

Please only read this if you've seen the whole series.

So I finished watching the series and at first, the conclusion disappointed me a little. It was a bit like Breaking Bad, how things seemed to get intense and crazy towards the end, but the actual ending was very slow and peaceful. But I've given it some thought and now I really love the ending. Here's what I think they were going for with it.

Let's look at the fates of the characters, firstly. Tim, who became arguably the main focus of the series, does survive, but appears visibly scarred by the events and even leaves town. Jessica is revealed to be alive and recovering. Jay, Alex and the rest are dead.

The interesting thing is, I noticed some parallels between the ending and the beginning. A character (Alex/Tim) who has been scarred by something, informs a friend (Jay/Jessica) that he needs to leave, but does not go into any more detail than that. Now, the first time it happened, what followed? the confused friend tried to figure out what happened, got in over his head, and all this insanity happened involving the Operator, and many friends were roped in, resulting in the deaths of many.

So, I think the ending is trying to imply that this whole thing continued as a sort of cycle, that Tim would become the "next Alex" (who tries to disappear) and Jessica would be the "next Jay" (who later finds him and brings this all back to the surface). What if Jessica got curious, tried to track Tim down, found the Internet entries, found out about Jay's death, demanded answers from Tim, got her own friends roped in, and it all resulted in more attacks from the Operator?

The ending is very much open to interpretation and is intended to be ambiguous, so I don't think there really is an answer. Either way, I think this is an interesting angle to look at it from.

What do you think?

There's one thing I always wanted to know:

Where were the cops when all this was going down?

reply

The cops were probably looking in all the wrong places for answers. After all, who would believe a faceless Lovecraftian nightmare was behind everything?

Jay didn't need to mention anything Supernatural, he just needed to use his phone to tell the police that he has evidence that a man named Alex Kralie was responsible for at least one confirmed murder which there is video proof of and that he may be responsible for more as well as at least one act of arson (Jay's apartment) as well as the disappearances of Seth and Sarah and possibly Brian.

At least that's what someone who ISN'T AN IDIOT would do.

That still leaves the fact that the police are just as helpless against The Operator as everyone else. In all likelihood, the only thing Jay would accomplish by doing this is getting whatever police officers they sent either brain-washed or killed.

Don't forget about the character of Amy as well. She also went "missing" and the cops would be searching for her too.

She's actually revealed to be have taken to a mental institute in the last entry. So no, she didn't go missing officially. Jay just had no idea where she had gone.
