If her husband died in Iraq, why not SMLI ?

I don't get it. if her husband was a service man and died in the war, why no life insurance ? Each servicemember gets a $300k ? policy upon enlistment. If she was not the payee her daughter should have been. Also, I believe servicemembers wives would be able to get the husbands school allotments ?

Another thing that bothered me..if they had a nice van, why not sleep in that instead of the dirty homeless shelter ?

One more point..what taxes would she owe ? She surely got earned income credit with a child and all...how could she owe so much in taxes ?

It is called SGLI and it is optional. It ranges in value and surprisingly people opt not to take it. Even when headed to a warzone.

Yes

On the other hand, the child is eligible for Social Security.

I don't know about the army benefits. I agree about the van, under the circumstances, since the shelters had such poor security anyway.

It's possible for her to owe taxes if the IRS discovered an error on at least one return. For example-perhaps she was entitled to a $3000 refund, but she got a $6000 refund.
