I don't like the message of this movie nor do I like the title

I mean I get theat TP caters to a certain market, but I have a feeling this movie is gonna send the message that prince charming will sweep the down and out baby mama off her feet everytime

reply

Yeah, it's Captian-Save-A-Hoe: the movie. I don't like the message here either. Most baby mamas are going to get their heads filled with nonsense thinking some rich dude is going to save them. The reality is most dudes are just going to KEEP ON WALKING.

No man in his right mind is gonna pass up a woman with no kids and no drama for a baby mama and drama. Only in Tyler Perry's world does this happen.

The same feeling I still have about Pretty Woman. Rich guy save call girl, blah blah, blah.

Watch the movie again and pay attention. There were 2 main stories. One being the Lindsey and Wesley being the other. He was about to marry someone who found him predictable and didn't expect him to change that. The fiancee also didn't want kids so the marriage wouldn't have worked. Wesley had lived his life the way his parents wanted him too but had never lived for himself and so once that was exposed his true feelings emerged.

I totally agree on this except he should have passed his fiance up as well as the janitor lady and went to Africa to be by his damn self.

Who's the captian and who's the Hoe???? Thandie was not a hoe, are you kidding or are you just a total douche? You obviously don't understand the message of the movie... it must have been TOO complicated

Um, did we watch the same movie? Lindsey wasn't a baby mama, unless you're using that term to refer to any mother who is single for any reason. Lindsey's husband was killed while on military deployment and she had to quit nursing school to get a job and raise her daughter. So she's a hard-luck case, sure, but not an irresponsible "ho" who got knocked up by a guy she wasn't married to.

And I think the fact that Lindsey refused Wesley's advances as soon as she knew he was engaged (even though by that time she was clearly in love with him), AND that she refused to let him kiss her when he came to her apartment all upset and confused also proves that she wasn't just a trashy girl with no morals looking for a man to pay her way through the world. I got the impression she was a decent girl that life had knocked down hard, and that even though things weren't easy, she was not going to compromise her values to get an easier way.

I also agree with the person above who said that it was obvious that Wesley and Natalie were not really right for each other. If Natalie found him so predictable before they got married, she would have been miserably bored with him after they got married. Better to find that out before you say the vows than after.

In fact, I thought that their realization of the flaws in their relationship and how they handled it was one of the strongest points in the movie. How often does a couple sit down and rationally discuss that they love each other, but not in a way that ought to mean a marriage relationship? How often are they able to say, I want this, and you want that, and we can't both have what we want? And how often are they able to face their families and a host of friends together and say "we've made a mistake and we are not going forward" without a big nasty fight? I thought that part was beautiful. Maybe more so even than what happened between Wesley and Lindsey.

The military offers dirt cheap life insurance, $30 a month for a $400,000 plan.

reply

Yes, that's true. But payouts on life insurance are only tax-free if the insured deals directly with the insurance company. If insurance is acquired through an employer (military or civilian), only the first $50,000 is tax-free. The remaining $350,000 is taxable as ordinary income ... and, at the highest tax-bracket. Living in San Francisco, where the movie is set, it's pretty easy to go through a lot of money quickly. And in this movie, the IRS was after her.

That part of the film should have been fleshed out better. But, there are a lot of people out there who are poor money managers - especially during times of grief. So, if Lindsey was a poor money manager, I suppose that could be forgiven (by everyone but the IRS, hehe).

I haven't watched the movie, but did they really get into all that... my goodness.

Nope. The person before me brought up the fact that the woman's husband was a soldier who died in combat and that cheap life insurance was available to him. Insurance was never mentioned in the movie ... but, the movie showed her wages being garnished by the I.R.S. I just wanted to point out that if he DID have this insurance, the payout after death was a double-edged financial sword. Imagine winning a lottery where they didn't take out any taxes ... and the I.R.S. knocking on your door April 15th with their hand out (grin) after you'd spent it all.

reply

True!!! I guess I have to check out the movie and judge for myself. I'm not a big TP fan, but I do like "Why Did I Get Married" part 1 and "For Colored Girls".

you could say she had an irresponsible husband for not looking forward...why isnt this insurance mandatory, especially if you have a family ? as a character in the movie she should have carried some anger for her husbands lack of planning ?

reply

It's just Twilight for black girls. Only instead of a vampire or werewolf being the far-fetched love interest, it's an average, responsible black man.

reply

I never thought if it that way.

I agree. This movie is about two people (Wesley & his fiancee) who are saved from a "predictable" life and a marriage destined to fail. If anyone was saved in this movie, it was EVERYONE ... including Wesley's mother who now knows she has a son who is pursuing HIS dream ... and Wesley's brother who, without Wesley to sabotage, now has to stand on his own two feet and take charge of his own life.

Far from being a fairy tale, this film explores the depth to which coincidence plays a role in changing us. And it does change us. Thoreau once said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." And sometimes, a coincidence in our lives is required for us to experience the epiphany that will change us in fundamental ways - freeing the "song."

I only had one niggly about this film - an error at the ending. But, it's a forgivable error. Until recently, Tyler Perry suffered from a morbid fear of flying. So, he's never been on a post-9/11 airline flight. But finally, he dealt with that fear by taking flight lessons - getting his pilot's license just this year. So, he'll probably fly himself everywhere he needs to go and STILL won't fly on an airline:

The error? In order to get to an airport boarding gate, you have to pass through airport security screening. And no one passes through screening without a valid boarding pass ... something Wesley's mom obviously did NOT have when she "saw him off" at the airport. Oops (grin). I have submitted this to IMDB as a "goof."

I'm really starting to wonder if the OP (and many others on this board) have actually SEEN this movie before they comment.

reply

I am not a big Tyler Perry fan by no means but I believe he gets a bad rap. Almost all of his movies on imdb have gotten an unfair low rating for what ever reason. Before you jump at me with the race card. I am a straight 39 year old caucasian male married with 2 kids. Tyler has had some good movies and some mediocre at best. There are a few movies that have gotten really low ratings and they deserve a little higher rating.

reply

Kudos!!! Its refreshing to see a positive comment about Tyler Perry. Most of his movies have a message but sadly so many people out there are so very negative that it blinds them and it doesn't allow them to see any of the messages.

reply

^^Agreed, this was a good movie.

Isn't that the premise of the Rom/Com genre, not just Tyler Perry? Do you hate it in other flavors as well? Or just chocolate?
