Predictable, Fairytale Ending, Flat Characters, Overacting

Are this movies main problems.

Predictability - I saw this movie yesterday. In the second half of the film I literally called 75% of what was going to happen once a scene started to the girl next to me. "Oh Walter is going to cause a scene." "Oh the mother threw them an engagement party", "They're about to kiss now". Seriously TP's films are way too predictable for an intelligent film fan. And the montages of the city were pointless and out of place, we know he's rich we don't need random shots of the the city to bring that point home.

Fairytale Ending - TP is known for this one. Its not realistic that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the movie came up roses in the end. Every single one. The mother accepted his decision, TP was finally 'free', he got the girl, she's not poor anymore and has a man, Gabby and TP mutally respect eachother and part ways, the company will be fine, his brother MAGICALLY knows how to behave himself, and that last one came out of nowhere and is an insult to the intelligence pretty much. I know we are supposed to suspend disbelief, but c'mon really?

Another problem in the is vein is that TP overdramatizes everything nad barrages the audience with melodrama so much that it divides the audience. Those that are locked in are going to endure the emotional highs and are connected to it. For me, I'm in the other half, it just became camp and goofy and I was literally laughing most of the movie because of TP just doesn't know when to stop beating the audience over the head with emotion. And that leads me to overacting. Tp's acting was fine, and most of it was okay, but that main actress he uses to much relied too much on emotional highs and oversold in some scenes. SHAME ON YOU! SHAME ON YOU! Again you gotta know when to rein it in and be subtle, you don't have to go to level 10 everytime to convey an emotion and thats another example that TP doesn't know when to stop and be subtle

The Flat Characters were the biggest problem by far for me. Tp's an all-around good guy with NO temper who has giant fake horseteeth veneers and doesn't fire an employee HE DOESN'T KNOW after repeatedly being cursed out and after she violates company policy. okay. His mom is a controlling vindictive manipulative woman who weild power over everyone. okay. Hs brother is bitter and angry for NO REASON and is volatile the entire movie. The little girl is cute. The mother is angry and rude. Gabby is disconnected. All these characters only have one personality trait that is on display until the end when some of them flip. I don't like these cardboard cut-out characters that have no depth, and thats another reason why I was disconnected and laughing, I didn't believe what they were selling.

Now I know I'll be called a hater, but for the record here we go. No I don't care for Tyler Perry. Yes I'm Black. Yes I've seen a little less than half his movies. So he's black and successful. Great. So he's got money. Wonderful. Good for him. But the guy has got to learn to start making movies without these huge glaring flaws, c'mon TP, 8 years in the business, lets get it together.

I went to see GOOD DEEDS yesterday, and I found it to be a pretty satisfying film--my only real problem with it was with Wesley's brother, who came as one spoiled a$$hole, for real. In real life, he would have already got shut down and fired with a quickness, being the boss's brother or not. I felt like Wesley and his fam were WAY too tolerant of his arrogant antics. Especially after he nearly screwed up a business deal with the old couple? He should have been let go after THAT,seriously. I was glad when the janitor went off on him, because there was no call for him to act like that over a parking space---he was just being a a**hole,straight-up.

That said, I actually liked the film---particularly because for once TP didn't push the religious angle like he usually does in most of his films (I don't have a problem with that, I just noticed that it wasn't as emphasized this time around). Considering that he's got a formula pat down for most of his films, this actually represents a step in growth for him. For once the characters seemed to have a little extra depth, and the usual stereotypes weren't trotted out.Like, for instance, the Union character could have been a depicted as a major b****, but, for a change she wasn't, which was refreshing. Also, Newton's character was interesting in that she clearly had flaws, but isn't demonized for them. Okay, yeah, the ending was predictable, but I liked this flick---it felt real and refreshing, without any sex and not too much violence.

Anyway, I know most people on here HATE Perry's work, but, damn, I've seen WORST films from other directors---trust me, he is NOT the worst director out there--I've seen FAR worse, believe me. Also, some folks complain that his films are stereotypical---they aren't any more stereotypical that half the junk Hollywood makes on a daily basis. Another thing--he is only ONE black director--he can not represent EVERY black person in America or the world, for that matter. Also, he CAN act and he's good-looking---that my opinion, but those aren't the only reasons I've watched his plays and enjoyed the hell out of them AND laughed at them too (MADEA GOES TO JAIL and DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN are my favorites). Bottom line--there is a sizable black audience he tapped onto that was being completely ignored by Hollywood---THAT'S why he's popular. I honestly don't get some of the hate---hell, even some of our greatest director have made movies that weren't all that great to begin with.

Anyway, I'd recommend this movie to anyone who just wants to watch a nice movie with no violence/sex and lots of cussing, which was quite interesting--I really liked it---plus it was good to see one my current faves Thandie Newton onscreen again--she usually always plays difficult, prickly, but interesting characters. She had the best part in COLORED GIRLS---I guess that's how she got the co-lead role in DEEDS.

I also thought it was cool how the film touched on everyday things that are actually happening---like the janitor getting foreclosed on (which, sadly,is exactly how foreclosures go down in real life--I've seen them happen) and having to try and get room in a shelter. I thought the attack in the shelter was a bit exaggerated--I've known homeless folks, and I learned that in shelters the men and women are separated---there are actually separate shelters for both en and women, so that dude attacking her and her child wouldn't have gotten in there in the first place. Anyway, just my one pet peeve about the film -other than that, I enjoyed it.

I agree with you. It's like as soon as he becomes super popular, people find it cool to dislike him. I see this going on with a lot of celebrities when they become "overrated". Not saying that Tyler doesn't have his faults. But he's not the only director and writer with faults. Yet those other directors will be praised despite their faults.

Yea it was predictable. But not every single movie has to keep you guessing until the end to be labeled a good movie. And yes it did have a fairytale ending, but is that so bad? What's wrong with having a fairytale ending? I get it's cliche, but it's nice to see a movie that has a happy ending for once.

I think some people just like to dislike Tyler Perry, but he's got to be doing something right because he still has a large fan base. To the OP, it's okay if he's not your cup of tea, but he's still a good writer to me and all the rest of his fans.

Earnest answer? Learn to write stories about people, not characters. His writing still has an air (more like a strong odor) of staginess about it - in gospel theater, you don't need deeper characters because there's no intimate film camera capturing every nostril flare - and plus the audience is there for singing, dancing, and Jesus.

Everything you just mentioned is why so many love his movies. They are comfort movies. When horrible over the top things happen it's like schadenfreude. then combine that with the fairytale...the combination can't be beat.

Hahah, I actually enjoyed this movie despite it, but pretty much everything the OP said is how I thought too.
