What is the point of these celebrity mentors?

I didn't watch the first season, but I have been watching this season. I can't for the life of me figure out what the point of these celebrity mentors really is.

I don't watch very many competition reality shows anymore, but the few that I did used to watch, the judges were actually very interactive. American Idol, The Voice, The X Factor, Dancing with the Stars, etc. all have judges who actually give input to the contestants and truly judge and help them out. It isn't like that at all on Fashion Star and ultimately, I feel like these judges are so pointless.

They barely interact with the designers during the creative process. They check in every once and while and give a few comments here and there. Watching the first episode, I didn't that was a big deal because I thought they would actually judge the fashion when it came time for the fashion show... But nope, that didn't happen. During the fashion show, basically they just sit there and watch the models strut down the runway. They give small comments to each other during the fashion show and then afterwards the give maybe a 1 sentence comment to the designers. Then it shows like a 1-minute clip of them deciding the 2 people who they are putting up for elimination.

I get why they are there, but they aren't truly mentoring anybody nor are they really judging. I didn't watch the first season. So I didn't really know what to expect, but I kind of expected at least a little more interaction between the mentors and the designers.

Fashion isn't my #1 interest and I don't want to pursue it as a career, but I do like it. I'd actually love to hear more thoughts and opinions from the mentors.

Does anybody else agree? It kind of just seems like a waste to have Jessica, Nicole, and John there when it seems like they barely even do anything.

I believe the point--the only point--is to feature their names and brands in order to sell their own clothing lines and make beaucoup bucks. They don't give a flip about the clothing that actually appears on the show, the stuff they are supposedly mentoring. The buyers do, but only to the extent that they can also sell clothing. It's not really about design or developing a particular designer; it's about SELLING S HIT NOW!

Thank you, thank you--you're most kind. In fact you're every kind.

Mostly to bring in ratings. If they had no name fashion people no one would watch the show.

Yes of course they are there to bring in ratings, but just because they edit it out of the episode you are watching doesn't mean they don't interact with the designers. That's how tv & movies work. Stuff is sometimes edited for a multitude of reasons: time, flow, story, ratings, they edit things to make certain ppl look bad or good. This season the designers each have teams just like on The Voice so they have a bigger stake. I do wish that they switched up the judges every season though. That would be cool. I really wish ppl would stop making assumptions.

Maybe Jessica and Nicole really run their clothing line everyday, but I doubt it. There are some many celebrity clothing lines out there it's almost like anyone with a name can get in the business.

I agree! And I'm pretty sure I remember Nicole being on quite a few "Worst Dressed" lists!
