Burns is a real inspiration for indie filmmakers

At least, the way I see it. His success brings hope for anyone who wants to make it in the film business.

I agree.

He is also the only person I can think of who can actually direct what he wrote. So many have tried. So many have failed. I loved this movie and am so glad I stumbled upon it. He cast it brilliantly, too.

I totally agree. Burns, in regards to modern-day film making, is a huge pioneer and a great inspiration to aspiring film makers. Since his first film, technology has evolved so rapidly, yet I think it is really cool that he has stayed ahead of the curve in terms of releasing his movie and how he films & directs. This whole thing reminds me, in a small sense, of how Napster first shook up the music industry (although this is obviously done in a legal way). No one is saying big budget productions are in trouble at all; it is just that this blazes a trail in which other independent stuff can now follow and that is a good thing.

There is an obvious backlash against this (especially by the movie industry) as the most common argument I hear is that Eddie was given his studio, multi-picture deal after "The Brothers McMullen" and his follow-ups did not "live up to the hype" ("She's the One" did not turn as high a profit as the studio expected and "No Looking Back" was a financial flop). Sure, he is never going to be like a Spielberg or Scorsese, but why should that matter? He knows his niche and excels within it, imho. Even though people are conservative by nature, it is a good thing to question the status quo every once in a while, especially when technology has glaringly outpaced it.

The follow quote, from Eddie himself during a Daily Beast interview, is really spot-on:

To be fair, bypassing the studio forces you to make some significant compromises, but as a filmmaker, these are things I am comfortable sacrificing. While I may not get the comforts of a big production—the fancy equipment, the big set pieces, working with huge movie stars, I also have complete creative freedom to tell the story I want without any outside interference.

My favorite part is not having to compromise to studio heads or a slew of producers as that has been shown, time and time again, to be able to absolutely sink a movie.
