Why did Ava even go out with Michael in the first place?

Was anyone else puzzled by this? everyone in the movie, including her, said that she was out of his league, and later we find out she cheated on him and clearly didn't care for him at all, and she wouldn't 'do' anything with him, so what did she even get out of that relationship?

Maybe he was the nice, non-threatening boy she let her parents know she was dating so she had a cover story for running around with all the guys she was actually into?

She was just using him, he was a non-threatening comfort so to speak.
