Witch hanging in 1327 ?

This is from my viewing of Episode 1 only and not having read the book, but I'm not convinced that someone could be so easily (and apparently secretly) accused and condemned of being a witch and then hung. As far as I can find out, the whole witchcraft hysteria things didn't get going for another two hundred years.

Umm, what's your point, gallifreyent? It's not even certain what the motive behind her murder was, though there was definitely politics involved.

I agree with the OP. The whole witch hunt nonsense in the series doesn't even fit. It really took fire (no pun intended) centuries later with the advent of Protestantism to combat superstition which seemed to Protestants as being of BOTH a pagan and Catholic nature.

Witches were sometimes executed in the Middle Ages, but in England they were usually hung and never burned--and yes, after much more legal proceedings than we see here! Lords and kings and bishops do all sorts of things in this miniseries without the lengthy legal proceedings that actually existed in 14th-century England.

Um ... she wasn't secretly accused and condemned. Did you miss the whole scene of the trial in the marketplace where Caris was permitted by Bishop William to speak because it was a trial and defense could be presented?
