I prefer not knowing. But if I had to make an educated guess, I would say that he had the ability to either heal others or he possessed powers similar to Xavier (telepathy).
Love how they worked him into this universe.
I read a suggestion somewhere in the interwebs that his power could have been a superhumanly high level of charisma and persuasive ability, or something like that. Perhaps if he had lived longer, he could have used that influence to turn the tide of public opinion in favor of mutant-kind.
