Underwhelming

I was expecting great things from this and, while it had some real merit, it was rather uninspired.

It looked incredible and Pattinson was surprisingly good as Batsy and B-Wayne, and the music was fantastic, but it was a long slog with very little that made you ‘wow’.

The fight scenes were… meh, and the action scenes muddled. It was hard to see what was going on during the car chase, and the Batmobile - usually a highlight in these films - was some kind of compromise version which had neither the battle-tank quality of Nolan’s, nor the sleek dildo quality of Burton’s. It was just a souped-up car with a sprinkling of armour and a thruster.

Wokeness was present. A gang of thugs at the start are goading a semi-reluctant new member to attack a civilian. The goaders are all white, of course, and the thug with a conscience is black, of course. Several good characters are race-swapped from white to black (Gordon, Catwoman, mayor) and most obnoxiously Blackwoman refers to evil ‘white’ elites. Thomas Wayne is also slimed somewhat in a retrofitted backstory. All villains are, of course, white. The film is racist crap and you shoudn’t pay to see it under any circumstances.

With the spectre of the Nolan films still hovering over culture this needed to be something really special to stand out, and it just wasn’t. Nolan gave us The Scarecrow’s disturbing demonic hallucinations, Heath Ledger’s fantastic Joker, Bane’s creepy ass voice, a football field imploding mid-game, and action scenes with real tension. This had no such wow-factor, it was all serviceable but kinda bland.

For some reason this was rated 15 in the UK. I found it to be no stronger than the 12-rated Nolans, even tamer in fact. They should have gone all out with an ‘R’ and given us something special in the violence department. Let’s have some blood and bone-crunching violence, think Sin-City.

So yeah, it’s worth watching for the mood and some decent scenes but there are too many characters and it’s hard to care about much of anything.

reply

One point: Batman was first played by a woman with African ancestry in 1968.

Isn't 54 years enough time to stop complaining about casting that particular role?

reply

Batman was first played by a woman

The fuck are you talking about?

BWAHAHAHA!!!

OMG, Catwoman!

🤢 I actually agree with you on something
🤮

reply

Get used to it. As you mature you’ll find yourself agreeing with me on everything.

reply

I don't agree with your snowflake middle paragraph about wokeness, but I generally agree with the rest of it

reply

Eventually you will absolutely agree with me about the cancer of wokeness, you can only deny reality for so long.

reply

you should obsesses more about the mans hands and your barely hidden obsession with "hot men"

reply

I told you to keep your self-talk private. This is a movie discussion board and we don’t want to know about homosexual awakening.

reply

I wasnt the one who obsessed overly "manliness", "big hands" and twice fantasized about two men making out.

reply

What the fuck are you talking about? What does any of this have to do with The Batman?

reply

nothing :) its just fun to make fun of your weird pressed nature.

reply

WTF is ‘weird pressed nature’? The only person you’re making fun of is yourself, with your insatiable homoerotic appetite and complete inability to write in comprehensible English. Contribute to this discussion about The Batman or fuck off.

reply

"your insatiable homoerotic appetite "

who is the one who has made 4 comments talking about guys hooking up LOLLLLLLL. and who made zero?

you should talk to someone. this isnt healthy denying what you are

reply

OK you clearly have no interest in discussing The Batman and are just here for gay pickup. I’m not interested and I doubt anyone else here is either.

So here's what we’ll do… any further reply to me from you in this thread, regardless of the text, will be taken as an apology to everyone here for using this board for gay pickup.

I look forward to your apology…

Catwoman has been portrayed by Eartha Kitt in the past and she was not white in the year one comic book which this movie was clearly emulating. Gordon and Catwoman's race has never been an essential part of their characters.

The fights in this film were better than any of the fights in the Nolan films. I say that and I love those films. The reason is no shaky cam, quick cutting or lackluster choreography. Is it the best I've ever seen? No but rather solid and more efficiently done than the Nolan films.

reply

So why the need to race-swap them at all? The race-swapping is part of a package of woke measures, which is unjustifiable.

reply

Because their race isn't essential. Therefore there are multiple ways to interpret the character. You are simply used to seeing her as white therefore that's the only way you want her to be portrayed. Just because that's your preferred portrayal doesn't mean that is the only one artists have to adhere to. I just proved by using a comic book that there are other ways to interpret her. So um no you are wrong that it's by default woke just because she isn't white.

reply

The characters were originally white and there’s no need to race-swap them, and it was obviously done as part of a package of woke measures which is unjustifiable.

reply

And the year one comic proved there are other ways to interpret the characters beyond their original portrayal. Nothing says Catwoman has to be white. Characters change and are interpreted differently over time and in comic books. So no they don't always need to be white just because that's how they were originally portrayed.

reply

The characters were originally white and there’s no need to race-swap them, and it was obviously done as part of a package of woke measures which is unjustifiable.

reply

It's only unjustifiable to you, dear. The rest of us understand about hiring either the best actor for the job, or the actor that will increase their profit margins the most, and part of the actor-to-profit calculations include bringing in diverse audiences.

These films cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make, and they aren't going to earn that money back by catering just to a few DC nerds.

reply

Notice how his brain got fried once I presented simple logic. Literally all of them quickly neglect the Year One comic and Eartha Kitt. This whole Like seriously these characters have more than one way they can be interpreted. How ignorant to think there is only one way.

reply

No cunt, it’s your brain that has melted - you keep dodging the actual point being made - highlighted in bold text - because you cannot counter it. It will be repeated until you engage with it. If you don’t, it just provides more insight into how the woke mind deceitfully tries to strawman and gaslight to evade scrutiny. Here it is again…

The characters were originally white and there’s no need to race-swap them, and it was obviously done as part of a package of woke measures which is unjustifiable.

reply

I didn't ignore your point I literally addressed it and dismantled it. Catwoman has been interpreted differently before the batman was even thought of. You have no counter to the year one comic book example I pointed out to you. If it ain't white it ain't right.

reply

The point, you fucking retard, is that the race-swapping in The Batman was done as part of a package of woke measures which is unjustifiable. Can you get that into your thick fucking skull?

reply

If it ain't white it ain't right. Prove Matt reeves and the film makers did this. You made the claim now let's see the proof. The burden of proof is on you.

reply

If it ain't white it ain't right.

I guess you couldn’t hide your racism forever. That’s pretty disgusting dude.

reply

Not the one who has an issue with a different racial portrayal of a character that's you. Man you lose againMe 2 you 0.

reply

Pathetic. Fuck off racist.

reply

Another point lost. Me 3 you 0.

reply

" gay pickup."
"stop trying to pick-up here"
"trying to pick-up guys"

reply

As I said, apology accepted. Just remember that this is a movie discussion forum and not a place for gay pick-up.

reply

No, it’s unjustifiable to anyone who objects to racist propaganda, which accounts for most people.

The race-swapping wasn’t done to hire ‘the best actor for the job’, it was done as part of a package of woke measures. You know this, but as a woke cultist you have to pretend otherwise to convince others, and yourself, that wokism is somehow fair - it isn’t, it’s pure racism and sexism.

reply

Sweetie. It's done to make money! That's the only real reason Hollywood ever does anything!

And there's really no money in catering to nerds who want everything on the screen to look like their childhood comic books.

reply

No, it’s done because of the ideological capture of Hollywood by woke cultists like yourself.

reply

Oh honey. Hollywood has no ethics, morals, or politics, it's all about the money. And if they're temporarily paying lip service to some aspects of Wokism, it's because they want diverse audiences, and particularly *young* audiences, to pay for their products.

And there's no money in pleasing comic-book nerds like yourself, there just aren't enough of you and you guys complain about everything you see anyway. Sucks to be you.

reply

Utterly wrong, Hollywood, like many other industries and institutions has been captured by woke cultists, who threaten accusations of racism/sexism etc if they don’t comply with woke dictates.

It doesn’t appeal to anyone and doesn’t generate money, hence ‘go woke, go broke’. Meanwhile, non-woke films like Top Gun: Maverick are setting the box office alight.

reply

If that's what you'd rather believe, then that's what you're going to believe, in spite of reality staring you in the face. Movies are a profit-driven industry, period, and the genuine Woke Cultists are too dysfunctional to ever achieve places of power in any industry.

It's all about the money, and your preferences aren't worth money! Sucks to be you.

reply

Yeah your pathetic attempt at gaslighting, to try and hide the power levels of woke, isn’t working, wokist.

reply

So you've gotta have the last word, no matter how stupid it is...

reply

Weak deflection. You’ve been found out, wokist. Deal with it.

reply

You're struggling to believe in your vast Woke conspiracy, because the alternative is recognizing your own insignificance. It's SO much more comforting to believe in all the evil Wokies conspiring against you and your fellow comic-book nerds, than to admit that yes, you're all insignificant.

Of course, the idea that people who are too dysfunctional to take a leak without needing therapy is not something a sane person could ever considers for a moment, so you've had to stamp out whatever sanity you ever possessed to keep the comforting belief alive!

reply

Yeah your pathetic attempt at gaslighting, to try and hide the power levels of woke, isn’t working, wokist.

reply

So you are saying there is only one way to interpret a character that has gone through many interpretations in comics... We have a smart guy on our hands folks..

reply

No, Cathy Newman, that’s not ‘what I’m saying’, that’s a strawman you pulled out of your ass and attributed to me, it has nothing to do with ‘what I’m saying’.

If you want to know ‘what I’m saying’ then read my posts and pay attention, or ask me questions.

reply

mf does tha tall the time, constantly. He makes up words in his head, imagines that you say them, and then judges you on them and attacks you based on that.

He is bat shit crazy. No bat pun intended.

reply

Why do you think you deserve the producers to cater to you?

reply

Of course, he can’t win a real argument so he pulls a fake one out of his ass and attacks it instead, hoping nobody will notice, then proclaims victory.

Strawmanning is an essential tool of the wokist, because they cannot defend their cult from any kind of rational or moral scrutiny.

reply

That they know they need to lie, to defend their positions, shows that on some level, they know that their positions are false.

Yet they hold to them, even though they cannot defend them.

They are scum of the earth.

reply

I did defend them. Year one comic and Eartha Kitt. Boom end of discussion.

reply

Yes, they’re fundamentally dishonest people who need the cult so desperately that they will happily reject reality.

reply

Funny what was your retort to Eartha Kitt and the year one comic book? Oh yeah nothing lol. I love bringing that up because you can see your brain malfunction because it is too much logic for you to comprehend.

reply

I’ve already addressed that multiple times in this thread, dickhead. Starting here:

https://moviechat.org/tt1877830/The-Batman/6302b3af73cbfb196f4267f8/Underwhelming?reply=6302bc6673cbfb196f42686c

reply

And you had no retort. Your retort was they were originally white... This is you implying that the only way they can be portrayed is as white since that is how they were seen originally. This is not how things work. Comic book characters can be interpreted differently. In your mind the only way this can occur is if it's woke.

reply

No, my ‘retort’ what what I wrote (linked above), not your strawman bullshit version.

You’ve just been called out for strawmanning and straight away you're doing it again. Unbelievably evil and stupid.

reply

Your lie is noted and dismissed. Anything else or we done here?

reply

We’re ‘done’ when you either fuck off or start telling the truth.

For as long as you lie or propagate wokeness you’ll be called out, so… your call I guess.

reply

Ok then can she only ever be portrayed as white then?

reply

If there were no signs of a woke agenda - ie no package of woke measures - and the film came out in a time when there was no broader woke movement… then a race-swap could be forgiven.

reply

So in other words when the Batman was made it wasn't possible to do it correct? She had to be white during the time it was made. It has to be this way because of what went on in other films.

reply

There’s no need to rewrite what I said ‘in other words’, just go back to my post and reread it if you’re confused, it’s perfectly clear.

reply

Nope your point got debunked. Anyways a sequel is happening to the Batman. Nothing you can do about it. It's time to face reality. So I guess the term go woke go broke didn't apply to the Batman lol.

reply

You’ve ‘debunked’ nothing. All you’ve done is reveal yourself to be a woke cultist, and none of your woke bag of rhetorical tricks have worked - you’ve fallen flat on your face very time.

reply

Your done. You are too ignorant to argue with.

reply

There’s no argument. You’re just… a specimen to be observed and laughed at.

You came here to gaslight people into thinking woke isn’t real, failed utterly because you’re dumber than the people you’re trying to dupe, then got called out for it and completely humiliated in public.

Now you want to leave and go cry, but your toddler ego wants to stay here and defend itself so you’re torn as what to do. I’m banking on your ego…

reply

I said you are done. Anything you say from here on out will fall on deaf ears. Leave this board.

reply

Yep, there’s that little ego kicking and screaming 🤣

reply

Did you know the original Selina Kyle was half Cuban (Comic Book Andy).

reply

I didn't know that. I'm sure that will make their minds explode.

reply

Rather than get embroiled in an argument (life’s too short), I thought I’d state a little known fact (Comic Nerd Andy).

reply

I'm not a wokist, I'm a liberal!

Liberals think that wokists are a bunch of spoiled, neurotic, unrealistic, totally useless kids. Almost as bad as conservatives.

reply

No, you’re a wokist. How you describe yourself is irrelevant, your actions here - irrationally defending wokism to the point of absurdity, trying to gaslight readers into thinking the woke assault on culture isn’t happening, exhibiting that classic woke personality trait of bitchiness combined with low IQ - all reveal you to be a fully signed up woke cultist.

Own it, then go seek help to deprogram yourself, then apologise to everyone, then beg forgiveness for being a part of that vile cult.

reply

To someone who cannot accept the truth, all common sense is "gaslighting".

reply

You’re now trying to gaslight readers into disbelieving the term ‘gaslighting’.

Thankfully you’re more stupid than the people you’re trying to dupe, so none of it is working.

reply

Go back to 4chan where you belong.

reply

Fuck off woke bitch.

reply

Reported for language. You do not talk like that on this board. You hurt my virgin eyes.

reply

remember when everything was PC. now tis "woke" and you are "gaslighting them".

they sure do love to just parrot whatever fox/dailywire/crowder tells them to say

reply

You’re projecting your need to parrot (because you’re incapable of independent thought) onto others.

Anyone with a brain and a shred of sanity can see the woke cult for what it is, and instantly spot its deranged, disgusting adherents.

reply

As expected too much logic made your brain short circuit. You got educated today. Do not worry I will not charge you.

reply

The only education you’ve provided is an insight into how the woke mind deceitfully evades addressing a point that it cannot counter.

reply

Your attempt to evade my counter is noted and dismissed. Why was she mixed in the year one comic book?

reply

I don’t know. I don’t care. The point, you fucking retard, is that the race-swapping in The Batman was done as part of a package of woke measures which is unjustifiable. Can you get that into your thick fucking skull?

reply

You don't know or care because it undermines your point. If you are trying to emulate the year one comic book then you obviously model characters closely after the comic aesthetic in which you are going for. Kravitz looks like a spitting image of the year one interpretation. In your book she can only ever be portrayed as white otherwise it's political by default.

reply

OK this is like playing chess with someone who thinks the way to win is to eat the most pieces. You're too retarded to even grasp the simple fucking point under discussion, even when it’s been repeated in bold multiple times 🤦🏻‍♂️ If anyone reading this thinks that this dildo has a remotely valid point then quote it and explain why, and I’ll address it.

This invitation doesn’t extend to you, moviefanatic505, and any reply to me in this thread, regardless of the text, will be taken as an admission of defeat and an apology to everyone here for wasting their time. I look forward to your apology…

reply

Your concession is noted. Scoreboard me 1 you 0.

The fighting in this movie SUCKED compared to the Nolan films. Look at the fights with Bane. If you want to quickly compare Nolan's movies vs this just watch the sequence in Dark Knight where he fights off the drug dealers.

https://youtu.be/U_D3RZkxDx8

Nolan's movies weren't afraid to be dark unlike The Batman. The Batman wanted to be seen as dark, but was too afraid to hit a rated R. This can be witnessed in all of the off-screen "deaths," the scene where the murder was entirely blurred out, a completely made up drug, and a lot of other instances that I won't bother typing.

reply

Lol not a chance dude. Point to me where in the Batman thugs fall without being hit. In the dark knight rises this happens twice.

reply

The entire end scene with the Riddler henchman

reply

Nope I just barely looked it up and no I did not spot a goof on that level. I can link you exactly to the scene where thugs fall in the dark knight rises when Batman is nowhere near them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKIYkdE3S0Y in the first clip from 2:01 to 2:04 look at the top left. The thug falls for no reason. Second clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDdX6meXcY4 at bottom left from 2;41 to 2:42 the guy falls for no reason.

Look I say this and I am a huge fan of the Nolan films. However it is no secret that the combat is where the Achilles heel of the series was. In Batman Begins it was too close up and edited so quickly you barely could tell what was happening. The Batman is not too close up and is not edited quickly. You get a clear competent view of the action and it is better choreographed. Are there a couple decently choreographed fights in the Dark Knight? Yes but there are blaring issues throughout.

reply

Hahaha thanks for that clip. Maybe the guy was concussed? Probably not scripted as such, but either way. I can see you won't change your opinion and neither will I.

reply

It is not about changing opinions it is about presenting you argument in a logical fashion. I provided my evidence now lets see yours.

reply

HE SHOULDN'T...YOU SHOULD...YOUR OPINION IS WRONG.

reply

lol those killed me. But yeah, even if it weren't for those hiccups, you're on point. I love the Nolan films. The Dark Knight is one of my favorite films of all time. But the action choreography there leaves much to be desired. It works, but it's not great. And I'm glad The Batman excelled in this regard.

reply

I adore the Nolan films and honestly still my favorite live action portrayal of Batman. However i feel the fighting is competent not bad but not great. I feel it beats Batman movies in other areas but I think the Batman handled this aspect better. I can make points where I feel Nolan did better in areas also just not this aspect.

reply

Yep yep. When you compare the stairwell fight scene in the club from The Batman to the drug dealer fight above (which was definitely awesome when I first saw it), The Batman comes out on top.

On the flipside, I think Nolan demonstrated Batman's stealth much more effectively than Reeves XD (which may or may not have been intentional).

reply

Yep I agree. I feel Nolan also instilled more of the fear from criminals as well. Made him more deity like which I love. Also I do prefer Bale's physique for the role also. I think Pattinson was a great Batman though. I just want him with a tad more muscle next go around. Not like super beefy just a little bigger. Nit pick of course though he was a great Batman.

reply

I might challenge you a bit on this. I don't think fight scenes are written off by a couple of errors in them. For the most part I think the Dark Knight Trilogy has some good combat in it.

With that said, I agree with your point that Nolan's films' fights aren't better than Reeves' movie's fights, and you are factually correct that there are goons who are gormless enough to gaff up the choreo.

reply

Oh no make no mistake I am not saying the Nolan fights are bad. I just feel that is an area where they do not necessarily excel. In Batman Begins things are shot so close up and edited so quickly it makes it hard to comprehend what is going on. This was unfortunately a trend at that time in film making. The quick cut shaky cam fights to mask sub par choreography. In the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises the camera is pulled back and it is not doing that quick cutting. Therefore you get a clear view of the fights. Unfortunately though when you get a clear view of the fights it makes goofs more noticeable and it can make lackluster choreography stand out more. The fight in the docks works well, however when he is fighting Ras Al Ghul on the train it is a bit of a mess. The docks needs to display Batman as a horror monster which is great, however when fighting on his level we need to see a clear view of the fight.

I agree though for the most part I think the fights are competent. I however stand by The Batman having better combat in it which I see you acknowledged. This is not me picking one vision over the other. I think Burton, Nolan and Reeves are great and excel at different things. Each vision has it's strengths and weakness in my book. I love Burton, Nolan and Reeves vision of Batman in the end. All three have done awesome stuff with the character.

reply

Ah, yes. I just misunderstood the level of criticism. I agree with your assessment of the Nolan films' fight flaws. I do think he had a great action sequence with the car chase in The Dark Knight; that one might be his best. And, yes, I also concur that the tight, quick-cuts works for the docks fight in Begins, but the shaky cam stuff is tiresome otherwise. Horrible trend. Cinematographers and/or directors mistaking action movie fights for Saving Private Ryan... Conveying the chaos and anxiety of combat is important in a war movie, not Transformers.

Yes, I do personally prefer the fights in The Batman. Interestingly, Batman himself seems less skilled in that film - he takes more hits and dispatches enemies more slowly (and relies on the occasional electric stun-gun); he also is clearly dependant on heavy armour. However, that was an aspect I enjoyed. The Batman is a rare action film that didn't have the group of enemies attack one at a time. Batman gets hit a LOT because guys come flying from all directions. It's nicely done. It feels a bit more real and down-and-dirty like a street brawl.

reply

But Nolan's trilogy are all rated PG-13 as well... if "...afraid to hit a rated R," is your criteria for "dark" (I would disagree), then Nolan's films don't hit that area, either.

I really loved The Dark Knight and The Batman, just as I loved Burton's films. I don't want to really pick exactly which one is "best" because they all do their "thing" so very well, indeed, and all are great in their own way. My personal preference is Burton's films, but that doesn't mean I think they're "better" or that the others sucked.

As to the fights, again, they each have their own styles. Batman Begins has a great fight by the docks where Batman is presented almost as this horror monster, which is great. The Batman gave him a fighting style that was more about tanking hits with armour and delivering haymakers. But it's what the scenes were accomplishing that matters.

So, take Batman Begins: we've already seen Bruce learn to fight, so what we need to see with the docks fight is the realization of the Bat persona that Bruce actualizes. That persona is built on fear (the theme of Begins) and so we get "horror monster Batman".

On the other hand, The Batman needs to introduce the character. He's only been introduced in voice-over, not seen. It has to take its time showing us Batman, so we get two "false starts" before seeing him emerge from the tunnel. The themes of The Batman are about vigilantism, so we see him fight with brutality. The Batman also wants to show that this is "year two" so he isn't an impossible ninja here. Hence the emphasis on his armour.

Is one better? I don't think so. Both accomplish what they want to accomplish and give us a Batman commensurate with the themes of the films. I remember being generally thrilled and having a good time watching both. As another generalization, Nolan isn't renowned for his fight scenes, but that's okay because he's a great director and delivered some awesome Bat-movies anyway. Again, Burton is my favourite, and he's really not a "fight scene director".

reply

Agree; its 'soon to be forgotten' kind'a movie.

There's nothing so memorable in it. Riddles were quite lame.

An attempt at making a Film-Noirisque version of Batman movie is appreciable, ending was good, but finally, nothing special & forgettable.

reply

I have already forgotten the ending, but I zoned out when the flood happened. Not much to this film

reply

Yeah there’s lots of unwarranted fanfare about this movie. Maybe because Marvel has turned to shit and DC’s track record has been atrocious this stands out as special by comparison.

With a more focused story, no wokeness, no Blackwoman, and more violence… this could have been a great superhero film.

That said, we really didn’t need another superhero movie. That cow has been milked, slaughtered, raped and beaten into pulp. It tried to rip off Seven - what I wouldn’t give for a quality mid-budget thriller like Seven right now. Just one. Come on Hollywood… 🙏🏻

reply

meh agree to disagree. if they can create a few more films like this it'll be one of the best trilogies

reply

"underwhelming, needed more man hands and hairy chests. im def not gay though"

OK you’re clearly just here for gay pickup. I’m not interested and I doubt anyone else here is either.

I look forward to your apology…

reply

yes we know you said that before like a small child. if you could come out and stop focusing on gay men you would be alot happier

reply

Apology accepted.

reply

ya we know you said this before. like a kid in grade 6 "if you talk I win"

im sorry you are mentally 11 years old :( if you stopped with your homosexual obsession and were honest you'd be alot happier.

reply

As I said, apology accepted. Just remember that this is a movie discussion forum and not a place for gay pick-up.

YOU ARE AN INSANE PERSON.🙂

reply

Did you know the original Selina Kyle was half Cuban (Comic Book Andy).

reply

Excellent first paragraph.

reply

Nah, just a racist. I mean really, 'Blackwoman'? That's pretty mask off.

reply

I made it 20 mins in and turned it off.
