What's this I hear about a new Battfleck apoearance?

Aren't they making a sequel to THIS Batman movie?

How in contract-lawyer's hell can there be two movie Batmen at once?

reply

There always was. Reeves' movie was always standalone. Affleck/Keaton were always gonna appear in the Flash. Keaton was supposed to be in Aquaman 2. But after the release dates changed, Affleck had to shoot new scenes for Aquaman 2. That's the new appearance.

reply

But there's no such thing as s standalone comic book movie these days!

reply

The Joker (2019) is a standalone. They are making a sequel but it isn’t part of the DCEU.

reply

Once there's a sequel, "Joker" wi no longer be a standalone, it'll be part of a new franchise. Or subfranchise.

reply

Well since the creation of "cinematic universes" with officially recognized canon and timelines, apparently there is also now such a thing as a "standalone franchise."

'The Batman' and 'Joker' are both DC films with coming sequels, that stand alone, apart from each other and also from the DCEU

reply

Which is really going to mean duelling DC movie franchises!

The world of a DC fan is a very strange place.

reply

Agreed. Definitely weird.

reply

I much prefer the stand alone films.

reply

I do too.

I think Marvel has done a great job with their CU, at least up until 'Endgame,' but Batman and Joker don't belong in a CU anymore than Punisher and Daredevil do.

Street-level superheroes without powers should always be standalone.

reply

There is a old Batman and a young Batman...simple

reply

So... it sounds like there's going to be a young Batman, a middle-aged Batman, and an old Batman all coming out around the same time!

Like I said, the world of a DC fan is a strange place! Liking comic-book movies where everyone is miserable is one of the saner things about the fandom...

Comic book movies/tv shows are so over saturated now I'm surprised people are still getting up the shit. Yet great scifi films or dramas are going relatively unnoticed nowadays...shame...

I honestly prefer this.

One of my frustrations with the success of the MCU is that many viewers kind of just assume that now every movie needs to be part of an elaborate, cinematic universe. That sort of thinking leads to films like Dr. Strange 2, which can't reasonably stand on its own as a decent movie. It also leads to some MCU fans saying stuff like "you can't recast Iron Man", which is disturbingly myopic.

reply

I agree that the Marvel films have become too self-referential, they really do need to make sure that each film can stand on its own. That's how they'd bring in new viewers!

But that doesn't make the mess of incompatible Batman films any less silly, although maybe it will make for some amusing moments. I mean the Batman-Movie fandom is a bit, shall we say, a bit short on humor and irony, and I look forward to seeing them try to explain how the existence of three Batmans of differing ages and personalities at the same time... isn't funny.

The fact that they have to or the fact that you and others are expecting them to is part of the problem that I mean lol. Why can't there just be different movies, like how we comic book one shots, or different animated movie or tv show continuities. If there wasn't this implication of the need to explain them in-universe, we'd just treat every single movie on its own. I'd like that.

I didn't watch Joker, and I don't have to. A person can watch The Batman, and not watch BvS. And so forth. This would actually encourage more diversity because movies would have to work at actually being distinctive. Kinda like how The Batman is basically a three hour episode of criminal minds. And Joker is...well I hadn't watched it but I'm assuming it's unlike any other comic book movie. I hope we move towards that direction at some point.
