Marshmallow fondant

Just watched the final and Mary Berry had never heard of marshmallow fondant. Are you kidding me? How can you b a baker and do any kind of decorating and not know about MMF? I was completely baffled. I've been using it for years. It tastes great and works well especially if mixed with modeling chocolate and is far less expensive than store bought.

Is this a British thing that MMF is not made at home?

Marshmallow fondant is USA born-just like "Viennese" torte. It's interesting she never heard of it though. But then again Paul thought it strange when they wanted to combine peanut butter with...gasp...grape jelly. I burst out laughing when I saw his face.

I cracked up at the pb&j reaction, too. He seemed so skeptical, and I was thinking, "This is one of the most classic combinations under the sun!"

All of my European friends think peanut butter is very strange, and I just don't understand. I love pb&j!

At first i thought he was just teasing her.

When my daughter was an exchange student in Denmark, back in the eighties, peanut butter was at the top of the list of items she requested in her "care package," along with beef jerky and tortillas.

I'm American. I love PB&J. But I'm skeptical of it in contexts outside the sandwich too. Something about other flavors influencing the purity of the PB&J. Bread doesn't have much effect.

I don't trust people who don't like pets and I don't trust people who pets don't like.

Other than the classic PB&J, I love to swirl a big spoonful of peanut butter (the creamy type) into a bowl of slightly softened/melted vanilla ice cream. I don't completely blend the PB though, just leave it in pieces that harden a bit upon coming in contact with the cold ice cream.

Excuse me while I go raid my freezer and pantry!!

softened/melted vanilla ice cream

It's even better with chocolate ice cream!

reply

I've tried it with chocolate but didn't like it as much as with vanilla. However, I absolutely adore Baskin-Robbins Peanut Butter 'n Chocolate ice cream because the peanut butter is in big pieces (like in my vanilla concoction) and the chocolate leans toward the dark variety, which is my favorite.

Excuse me while I go to Baskin-Robbins!!

I thought Paul's reaction was funny too but I figured that peanut butter was just an "American" thing that other cultures didn't know about. I've heard that Vegemite is very popular in Australia (I once heard it referred to as "the Australian equivalent of peanut butter"). When I looked it up to see what it was, I saw the phrase "beer scum" as being the main (or only) ingredient and I started gagging. I haven't done any additional checking on Vegemite because I'm afraid of what I'll find out about it  but people in Australia apparently like it. I guess it's just a matter of knowing about and being used to what you have in your own country. As they say, different strokes for different folks.

American peanut butter is very different than PB in other countries. Our versions have much more sugar. As for vegemite, it isn't used in the amount that PB is used on a sandwich. Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. You put a VERY light smear of it on your bread or cracker. It's very strong and definitely an acquired taste. Australians eat it from the time they are very young.

Yes, Paul's reaction to the thought of grape jelly with peanut butter cracked me up. Here in the US peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches are a staple in many lunches LOL

But then again peanut butter and chocolate are not well thought of in the UK and that is one of the most favorite flavor combos in the US
