And yes, a paycheck of any kind is nothing to sneer at these days.

SyFy Channel pays for the production of these B movies. They are dirt cheap to make and they get decent ratings so that's why we keep seeing more of them.

Simple economics 101.

i think it's a contractual thing. you act in a syfy tv show,you are optioned to do a syfy movie. kind of like abc back in the seventies. every actor on an abc show was required to guest star on either Love Boat or Fantasy Island.
