Kinda felt like a comedy..?

Did anyone else get the feeling they were watching a comedy? With the dialogue and the editing, I just couldn't shake the feeling I was watching a typical american (Sandler-ish) comedy. The subject matter wasn't funny, but it always felt like someone was about to tell a joke.. :P

Yes, I agree. There were several slapstick scenes that felt out of place and ruined the tone of the movie early on. The opening scene where he pisses on David Krumholtz, the scene where he falls off his bike, the scene where he breaks the window, and the scenes where Dax Shepherd vomits were all very lightweight slapstick comedy which felt somehwat at odds with the darker themes of death and the overall plot of murder.

So a drama about life can't have comedy in it? Why does one film have to only be one thing? The movie was an emotional roller coaster. Loved it

There were a lot of witty lines. If you have Robert Downey, Jr. in your movie you have to take advantage of his skills.

reply

Exactly.

And Sandler-ish? Definitely not. And I'm sorry if he's become what people think as typical American comedy!

Adam Sandler is a buffoon. How could you possibly compare this drama and the level of stars in this movie to any thing that dope would make?

reply

I think RDJ brings humor to any role, but it also had the polar opposite of that. When he was fighting with father etc, I felt really sorry for him.
He was a top lawyer, which means the character was quick witted. I laughed a few times, and I also almost shed a tear. It was a well balanced movie I thought.

It's called Comic Relief.

If it was all just doom & gloom (divorce, death, murder, incontinance) then nobody would be able to get through the two and a half hours. Most dramatic films have it.

And a "Sandler-esque" film??? Please. When's the last time an actor in a Sandler film was nominated for an Oscar? Never.

reply

I agree. I loved the movie.

When you have Robert Downey Jr in a movie, you're going to get his wonderful sarcastic wit. The movie had a perfect mixture of drama and comic relief.

Whoever did the casting hit the nail on the head with all these great characters, and actors.

Although a few light comedy moments, this was definitely NOT a comedy.

I felt exactly the same way. For the first hour, I kept saying to myself, "What's this movie trying to be?" Which is a horrible think for a movie to make you think.

reply

I think that's Downey ' s fault. This guy can't shake off his little comedic quirks he has, kind of like Johnny Depp.

reply

In the '30s and '40s, that was called being a character actor. Too bad fans have forgotten that concept.

This is not a comedy but had some comedy moments. The funniest scene in the movie is
RDJ "Do you have bumper stickers on your vehicle?"
Juror "Yes"
RDJ "What does it say?"
Juror "Wife and dog missing, reward for dog."
