Don't care what people say about RDJ.

People always say he plays the same part, and to a certain extent, I agree. But that doesn't mean when I'm watching this, I'm thinking about Tony Stark! (Although I did last night with all the swearing, what would Cap say?!)

But it's a brilliant movie.
By no means a new premise, guy returns to home town he wanted to escape. Goes back, finds out he might be a father, his ex girlfriend, his clash with his father who he's obviously struggled with, and the inevitable reconciliation with him.

It's an old story, told many times, but RDJ was in this one, and he was brilliant. The writing was superbly done. The cinematography brilliant.
The scene where The Judge orders the car to stop, he gets out, and Hank walks the other way, with the brothers in the car, exactly centre shot. Brilliant, just awesome.

I think what it is isn't that he plays the same character.

This character wasn't Tony Stark, though it was a father/son dynamic issue.

But he has similar hand and facial movements in many of his movies.

It's not the same as playing the same character, but I think it's these things that play at the edges of people's minds when they watch him.

I love watching him because he can say so much without uttering a word. The expressions on his face are extraordinary. I just watched this movie. It wasn't what I thought it would be but I really enjoyed it.

I also really liked him in this. He had some great lines to work with and delivered them with aplomb, often in a rapid-fire, wickedly clever style, such as when he diffused the conflict in the bar. The adversaries in that scene were clearly intimidated by it. I completely bought his characterization of a first-in-his-class, high dollar attorney who had a reputation for being ruthless in a courtroom.

The interaction between Downey and Duvall was intense, dynamic and poignant.

Good movie !
