If only republicans were more like Will McAvoy

I wouldn't hate them so much for being so backwards on every issue.

reply

I don't think that their core ideals are backwards just that the party has been corrupted by its leadership. I used to identify with many republican ideas but as Will said I have to be anti science, and I am not, anti gay and I am not.

reply

You're not wrong to say they've been corrupted by their leadership, but it's also not wrong to say the leadership has been hijacked by their nutso base. Making it completely wrong to use the words "their leadership." There are no leaders. They're all following the wackos, who are all following liberals. (Progressives. Whatever.) Whatever liberals/(progressives) are for, they're against. Whatever liberals/(progressives) are against, they're for. And the Tea Party (always in the cross-hairs of Will McAvoy) exposed that on a grand scale, forcing Republicans to oppose measures they once were for, or no other reason than Obama proposed them. (Obamacare is a great example. Which, now we see, is exactly what Republicans are planning to "replace" Obamacare with. They'll just name it something else.)

Liberal tolerance at it's best.

reply

"Tolerance". That's the key word. It seems to be missing from Republicans vocabulary.

reply

I'm a Canadian, living in Europe, by American standards pretty left-wing even though I consider myself to be a centrist, and even I think you're a retarded liberal. You throw insults at cons, one of them asks you to be more tolerant, and your response is "I know you are, but what am I?" And all while being totally condescending. Get a life, loser.

reply

Get a life, loser.

I know you are, but what am I

Right? Every single time someone with a brain dares to express a problem with right-wing idiocy (gasp!!), it's inevitable some window-licker will bawl out something about "liberal tolerance" in response. It's like it's out of a dogeared playbook (which probably has brightly-colored pictures all through it, going by the mentality displayed by that demographic).

BTW, sluggr et. al., I'm an independent. I know, it's practically the same thing as being a gaw-dam librul, since I'm not firmly in your very special camp. Don't worry, no one expects logic and discernment from you good folk at this point!

reply

One of my favorite right-wing straw men. "Liberal tolerance."

If we're not tolerant of your intolerance we don't get to call ourselves tolerant. A label you guys made up in the first place.

Good times.

Many Republicans are similar to Will, they believe in limited government and a prohibitive military. In those places where the government does have to get involved, don't pansy-ass it, go all-in and get it done. Spending should be reigned way in (including on defense). Markets should determine the economy, and that includes letting banks fail for making poor choices.

It's the people that have become the Republican "leadership" by being in Washington that have largely given the Republicans a black eye and led to one of the most worthless Congresses in over 2 generations. The role of Congress is not to categorically block any and all attempts by the President to govern, it's to find a way to come to a compromise on issues and pass legislation to improve the country. Modern Republican leadership (the leadership of my party) has lost sight of that.

reply

Give them a POTUS who defines "negotiation" as passing all of his legislation before even sitting down at a table to negotiate, and blocking every bit of his legislation that they can is about the only response he should expect. If he had any real political experience, he would have known that going in.

You know what noone tells you about cooking with the Dark Side? The food is really good!

Is all that true or did you hear it on Fox News?

There is already one sitting in the oval office, his name is Barack Obama.

reply

Well, then those Republicans are the rarity, cause apparently the rest of the party regards them like Christopher Lee regards a cross in the face.

reply

I agree. 20 years ago Obama would be considered a moderate Republican on all fiscal matters.

reply

Today, Ronald Reagan would be considered a communist. (By the current Republican party.)

reply

my politics tend to lean left, but I know, like, and respect people whose political ideology differ from my own. my biggest problem with the current Republican party is that they have allowed themselves to be taken over by the ultra-conservative religious right, who I feel are destructive to the country.

but one of my biggest pet peeves is people, on either side of the isle, who casually insult a huge group of people just because they have a different point of view (libtard, rethuglican, etc...)

reply

In a nutshell, if people who don't share you political views shared it more, you wouldn't hate them so much.

reply

Finding a republican like Will is finding a liberal Muslim. They are both rare commodities.

reply

A liberal muslim isn't a "rare commodity". It's an antithesis. Just like a self-proclaimed conservative who claims to be also a liberal. Some things don't go well together.

A republican like Will is easier to find, that's for sure. But wait... is he really a republican ? I mean, a true one, not a sorkinian castrated version ?

reply

Agreed. There are no Will-type Republicans left.

reply

I think that Will made if perfectly clear over the course of the series that Tea Party members ARE NOT Republicans... that they are extremist that took over the party from genuine republicans.

Didn't he called them "American Talibans" in one episode?
