Bad, Bad, Bad. No Redeeming Qualities.

This show is so efing bad I feel insulted catching the last half hour. In the first segment that I saw, he had a cop pull a random amount of bullets out of his pocket. He then "figured out" how many the cop had concealed in his hand. He got it right twice, I'd like to see the deleted scenes.

The second, three police office workers fabricate a crime in their heads separately. "Coincidentally" they all fabricate the same crime. BUT It actually happened, and to make it completely ludicrous, he actually had the file in a closed folder on the table the whole time. And it didn't even happen in their jurisdiction, or recently for that matter. They had all came up with the Robert Blake murder case from ten years ago.

The third segment with the stolen belle-aire was just false altogether in every singe way. First the thieves would have to be pretty damned cooperative, and not just lawyer up. Second, him shaking their hand at a map was just plain funny, and probably illegal. I don't know what the laws are regarding physical contact of a suspect.

Between Discovery and History channels, Plus the crap on A&E. TV is getting pretty bad to say the least. I feel slimed.

reply

Yeah, the science and history channels used to be a haven for smart people, but now it's a bunch of crap about Bigfoot and ghosts and UFO's. I don't know what the hell happened. I mean, TLC used to be The Learning Channel. Now it's the channel that show "Toddlers and Tiaras"!

reply

Yeah, I know. TLC went down first a few years ago, the rest followed. But it just gets worse and worse. Pawn Stars, American Pickers and that restoration show I suppose have some thin historical value, but in the end it's just cheap staged reality programming. Harcore Pawn on A&E has absolutely NO redeaming value, It's just staged exploitation TV. I like Mythbusters, The rest is just disposable junk TV.

And those survival shows. Just them against the wild...With a film crew. At least the first survival show a few years ago had the guy truly alone, and hauling his own cameras. now we get countless knock-offs.

It's just the further dumbing down of society. Cheap exploitation TV, with staged reality and fake drama. Put it on, the sheeple will watch.

reply

I disagree entirely. What I saw him do in this show are actually confirmed tactics that some magicians and 'psychics' use. Just because you can't do them yourself doesn't mean they're impossible for everyone else.

reply

The show is a fraud. If I'm going to watch tricks and illusions I'd rather watch Penn and Teller. At least they tell you straight up "Hey look, we're tricking you. Ha ha". This guy's trying to convince you it's some sort of applicable crime fighting tool. This is the kind of guy P&T would debunk and ridicule on their show Bulls##t.

reply

Maybe you should have watched the first half of the show. It was the best part IMO and explained a bit more.

These are real methods that can be used to read real people. I have used some of them myself. They can be very useful in most aspects of every day life, not to mention in your local poker game .

reply

I did catch the first half later on the recast. The only thing that piqued my interest was the extremely cute, but incredibly ditzy sketch artist. She drew an exact likenes of his friend with just a few subliminal cues? Yeah right. That girl couldn't recall what she had for breakfast. I know, because girls with that type of personality are usually attracted to me. I can read them in 30 seconds. 9 times out of 10 they're not that quick on the uptake.

Matter of fact most average people will have trouble reciting a half dozen spoken details 5 minutes later.

I stand by my opinion.

I think it's safe to say that you don't know the power of the human subconscious. Read some Freud, Anna Freud, Jung, Edward Bernays, and then top it all off with the Award winning BBC documentary "The Century of the Self"

People are controlled by these methods every single day. They don't even know it. Magicians use them. 'Psychics' use them. Poker players use them. Businesses use them. Hitler used them. The US government uses them.

These things have been going on for over a century.

That being said, if you see no redeeming qualities in this show then there is only one logical solution for you: Don't watch it.

Fine. I understand where you're coming from, and agree with you. What he was showing us were some sort of subliminal tricks. But he did NOT show us a single crime fighting tool, as the show was implying. The gag with the 5 weapons on the table. I'll give him the guy with the handgun being over confident(but even that would be a stretch).

I'll add that if the producers eliminated the whole crime fighting angle, It would have been a fun and entertaining show.

Well, he uses tricks to implant thoughts in their heads...

I'm not sure how he did all of it, but I picked up on a few specific things he did...

With the first woman, he was telling her to pick a month, and he starts naming them January, February, March... etc.

When he gets to May, if you pay attention to him he does something with his hand. Lifting it up or moving it in some way that he didn't do with the rest of the months. That little movement implants the idea of "May" in their head because it's the word he said when he did the movement. And I'm not positive, but I think he made a motion with his hand after naming the months that he did 4 times, making her think of the number 4. So he subconsciously implanted "May 4th" in her head with hand movements. Not sure how he got 2001.

And with the third woman, when he told her to think of a weapon, he made a hand gesture of a gun as he said it. Not sure how she chose the specific type of gun, though.

But throughout the whole thing, the camera is only focused on him from the chest up, so maybe as he's talking, and giving them instructions, he's doing more hand signals below the view of the camera that the women standing there see and subconsciously use to think of what he wants them to think of. You can barely see the gesture he does when he says "May" but there is definitely something he does there that he doesn't do for the rest of the months.

They didn't all randomly pick the same case that they've never seen the file for, he just took the facts of the file and subconsciously fed separate details to each of them, then revealed where he got the facts from.

So even though there are a probably many things about this show that are fake, or are done with multiple takes, I think he actually does use gestures and movements and certain things to subconsciously plant concepts and images in people's heads.

Like the part with the sketch artist, when he was explaining it to her, I noticed the way he gestured when he said "hair" and the way he rubbed his face to hint at a goatee. Or the part with the guy shooting at the target. When he was saying "I want you to shoot anywhere on the target" he patted his shoulder, his chest, and brought his hand up to his head. So I was able to call the 3 places the guy was going to shoot as well because I noticed him do these movements during the initial explanation of what they were going to do.

Yes exactly. That's my whole arguement about the show. It's mostly trickery of some sort, and in no way viable crime fighting tools.

Yes. I think he's probably very good at picking up physical tells like facial ticks, shifting eyes and nervous fidgeting. Those are legitimate interigation tools. But he was going way into the realm party tricks.

This was only one episode though. It isn't "Crime Fighting with Keith Barry." This was just an episode about him using his abilities in a police setting, because he goes to a different place every week to showcase his talent.

The show is not supposed to be about him being some kind of supercop, it's just to show his abilities to read people's body language and subconscious tells and how he's able to influence decisions people make without them knowing it.

reply

Well, if you'd actually been paying attention to the show you'd know that the "car thieves" weren't actual suspects. One was an ex-car thief who had responded to an ad Mr. Barry had placed for someone to do a social experiment and his buddy. So, I'm sure he had full permission to have physical contact ahead of time.

He doesn't read minds - he implants subliminal thoughts into people's minds. Anyone can do the same, with some training.

I personally like this show. I find it very interesting how strong the power of suggestion can be.

However, even though I think Keith Barry is cute, I'd hate to be married to him! You'd never know whether it was your idea to have steak for dinner or his!

True!

Personally I like the show, but I don't think what we see on film are legitimate examples of what he tells us he can do. I mean, "Jon" was on Conan O'Brien, and the rich guy/ beggar was an actor, Derrel Maury.

I want to see actual footage, not staged footage with paid actors. They probably have to stage it for egal reasons unfortunately.

There is nothing wrong with this show. The problem is people like you, rp69, and ldrthmaul is that you are afraid of these types of concepts. Call it what you want - Trickery, Magic, whatever, but there is no denying this is real. Because of this denial, you ridicule or accuse instead of accepting. I don't mean to offend, this is not my intention. I'm simply pointing out what is normal reaction to these types of shows.

Now perhaps if they shown some of his failures, it would make it seem less fake but if you know anything about the human psyche or the human subconscious, then you might understand Keith Barry's methods more.

Every decision & emotion we make is accompanied by some sort of signal. Whether it be our eyes dilating, shift in one's body movement, a twitch, or change in our pulse, and others. These types of 'signals' can be read by a person trained in mentalism and human physiology also known as a mentalist. They can read someone's thoughts as well as implant thoughts by powerful suggestions. Just how easy can it be to influence the human being's mind? A perfect example is this:

Verbally or silently yawn in public where others can see you. Watch how many people yawn afterwards. Reason being is this: When someone see you yawn, it triggers a powerful suggestion into their subconscious making them want to yawn. This is because a yawn can trigger an emotion or a physical change, such as feeling tired, or some sort of release. This will even work when the yawn is communicated via text.

Now the episode you mentioned... if mentalism could be used to fight crime, it absolutely 100% would have an impact on the police force's success rate. But unless a police force has been shown the methods, trusting a mentalist over their training would be difficult.

Your argument here shows me that you are immature, stubborn, and you watch the show for the wrong reasons. The fact a 'cute' girl on a show held your attention definitely implies this. You fail to realize that she, 'cute' girl has drawn sketches for thousands of cases. Someone like that is incredibly intelligent and good at their job because they sketch based on questions they ask. A mentalist could easily exploit that talent by using physical gestures to describe what someone looks like. Now ask yourself this, how many times do you describe someone's facial features by pointing to something on your own face? I know for certain it's more than you think.

Again, people like you are in denial. Until you can understand the concepts discussed and shown on this show, you will never understand and will resort to ridicule.

Failure is not an option
