I'm watching the spanish version right now and I'm really surprised. The story is in chronological order, not separated by episodes (running time: 3hours). It's better than the UK version.

I'm watching it on TV. Believe me, in chronological order the story is better. I'm only saw episodes 1 & 2 from the UK version, so right now I'm seeing a lot of new scenes. And the story makes sense now.

I caught it on TV and was surprised LOL. Guess I don't need to download the other 2 episodes from the Canadian version.
It was actually a 2-episodes version that was aired at once, you can tell because the pugh-like Irishman sees the iceberg collide with the ship two times!

I watched the German version last night and it was all in chronological order, too, no flashbacks.
It was only the first half of it (shown as two-parter) though. The second part airs today. I wonder if it will include some of the flashbacks.
Germany, Spain, Finland and a few other countries have done the same thing. Personally, I prefer this version than the UK. Once I get the DVD, I'll be sure to make a fan edit.

I'm spanish too (from Spain of course), and yesterday (sunday 8-4-11)I watched it on tv like the post did, and it was like a tv movie. It lasted from 10 pm to 1 am, 3 hours including advertising and it was like a normal movie I mean it was not a tv series and the story was chronological like just any other movie and by the way I think it was very good, very good movie. I cried like a baby during almost the whole movie, well specially and the end when the ship crashed with the iceberg and they have to evacuate the ship.
I don't know why this movie has such a low rating, 4'9????? What's wrong with people??? It was a very well done movie with very good acting and script, very good stories, very good of that era wardrobes, very good and well made settings, etc etc and in my opinion more realistic and nice than the James' Cameron movie. Today I came here to see and know more about the movie and see others opinions and I was surprised to see the very low rating and the people saying it is a bad movie and that it is a tv serie! I don't know maybe I watched the wrong movie or people are just crazy!!!
The low rating is because the UK version is a "flashback" version. It's not in chronological order. You can't follow the story. Believe me, I saw the UK version (Episodes 1 & 2) and it's horrible. The chronological version is better.
shareYa I see, so it is not just divided in 3 episodes but also is edited very different? Then I don't know why they did that because in the version I saw was very good. Also people complain about the settings looking cheap and small and the script and acting being very bad but I don't see it. I think that the acting and settings and wardrobe and the script were very good. In fact I thought that for being a tv movie was really good. I mean people have to bare in mind that this is not a Hollywood superproduction so things can't be as good as in James Cameron movie but anyway this one didn't look cheap or bad.
Also the acting well in Spain like in other european countries they dub movies and also in Spain dubbing actors are excellent as well as the acting in general so I can't tell if the actors in the original version were bad since the spanish version was really good. Dubbing in Spain is the best thing we do.
The UK version is divided in four episodes (running time: 42 minutes). Every episode tells the story of some characters, so the ship always hits the iceberg at the end of every episode. It's a mess. We were lucky yesterday watching the hole story in chronological order.

shareThe Spanish and German DVD usually have the english audio (and subtitles). I recorded the chronological version last night from the spanish channel and now I have both audios (the spanish dub and the original english audio).

shareI hate the show. It seems to focus mostly on English toffs getting beaten up by Italians. What's all that about? Perhaps it is so the show appeals to the rest of Europe because all Europeans love to see the Anglo-Saxons get a slap?

Did Fellowes somehow decide to reedit his work in chronological order after suddenly realizing the original edit didn't work (wish he'd realized that sooner)? Or did the channels responsible for broadcasting the series unilaterally decide to re-edit the product they'd bought (in which case, even if it is an improvement, I find this a disturbing precedent in disrespecting an artist's choices)?

Canada re-arranged the the format and edited out scenes to fit screen time. I think it all depends on the network that bought the miniseries.

The European channels responsible for broadcasting bought the chronological version (two episodes, running time: 90 minutes) before the UK version was aired.
Interesting. So this would mean that right from the start, Fellowes wrote two different vresions of the same series? I don't know if I must admire his business-savvy or despise his lack of purpose as an artist.

shareI only saw the first episode but there was confusion with the Mantons servant they moved things that happened to later and then it failed to make sense and also Annie and Paolo was somewhat mixed up. The lack of perspectives means that we never understand some scenes.

shareThe 2-part German version isn't actually completely chronological! Although part 1 re-edits episodes 1-3 of the 4-part-version in chronological order and ends with the same cliffhangers as those three episodes, there's about 45 minutes of chronological footage left out.
Part 2 of the German version then jumps back to the beginning and gives you those missing scenes from episodes 1-3, before the ship hits the iceberg all over again.
So, no idea if the Spanish version really is chronological from start to finish. The German 2-part-version certainly isn't - although it only jumps back in time once instead of twice.
Personally, I prefer the 4-part-version as it has a certain logic (one episode for each class - and then they'll drown together), whereas the German 2-part version mixes everything together and the jump back at the beginning of part 2 doesn't make much sense.
But I'm really curious if the Spanish version actually is completely chronological. Anyone can confirm this for certain?
P.S.: Before anyone gets confused... German TV actually aired both versions. AFAIK zdf_neo aired the 4-part-version, whereas ZDF aired the re-edited 2-part-version.
The spanish version is completely chronological. The movie stars in 1911. The only "reset" was when John Batley saw the iceberg. This scene was shown twice:

This sounds like a terrible mess... How many different versions of this are there? Are the investors behind the making of this series planning to sell dvds of the Original English version, the Spanish version, the German version, the Togolese version... and when we've all had our copy of whichever version we like best, the Ultimate Collector's Director's Cut edition???

Here in finland they showed it in two parts and in chronological order. they showed the first part last week and the last one a couple of days ago. I was stupid and watched the first three parts of the uk version online and not from tv because I thought that the finnish version was edited the same. Then watched it from tv and it was so much better. They're already selling the dvd box here in finnish online stores. I think I'll buy it.
shareThe dvd/bluray of the show was released here in Holland last monday, but I haven't had time to check it out yet and find out what version of the show is actually on there. Yet, they're airing the two-part version this weekend.
It would be great if the dvd (or more plausibly the bluray) had a seemless branching option so you can choose whether or not to watch the episodes separately or watch it chronologically.

(it actually says here it comes with a hardcover booklet about Titanic/Cast&crew etc, bonus disc with the film 'raise the titanic' (random...), and a double-sided poster.
www.frs.nl is also a dutch site that has the show. Like i said, I'll probably go check it out this weekend. Usually we have identical releases across Europe but that doesn't seem to be the case here considering the UK BD is 1 disc, and this one is 3 discs. I'm just curious to see what version is released here considering the two-part version doesn't air until Saturday and the home-media release was last monday, lol.
Hi guys, I am from England too, and am a massive TITANIC fan. I love the James Cameron movie and when I heard that ITV in the UK were spending millions of pounds on a brand new TV Mini-series I was really excited and was really looking forward to it! They even hyped it up on the breakfast show "This Morning" and they interiewed some of the actors, and made a big deal of the fact that it's the most expensive (??) UK television Mini-series ever produced.
They also have used the cream of the crop of British actors and actresses in this production including actors/actresses who have starred in "The Tudors" and other such successful series, so I was brimming over with excitement.
Episode one began and we were only half way through when the Titanic struck the iceberg? That is when alarm bells began ringing in my head! I thought "What the heck is going on here? One minute its the 10th April 1912 and all of a sudden we jump to the 14th of April?? Also in episode one there were all kinds of dramatic scenes, in particular the one where the second class couple, (Ive forgotten all the names now as it's such a mess of a production), go to 1st class and have "tea and cakes" with the 1st class couple... There is this animosity around the table and we have no idea what its all about??? I am now upto Episode 3 and I still don't know what they were all arguing about? The second class wife seemed to take offence at being labelled Irish??
Another thing that has REALLY irritated me is the continuous repeating of scenes over and over again each week!! For Gods sake, how many more times are we going to see the 3rd class Mother go to the ships church service and have that unshaved guy whisper something into her ear?!?!?!? Ahgggggggggggggh!!!! Its happened three times now!!!!!!!!! The same with the 2nd class couple going back to their bedroom and there is a knock at the door with the maid saying "Can I turn down your bed madam?" and she says "Yes please"... The maid comes into the bedroom and helps Mrs Second class take off her necklace!!! We have seen this SAME SCENE 3 WHOLE TIMES NOW! I think to myself each week, "Oh here we go again!!!!!!!"...
I have a theory that the reason ITV have broadcast it this way in the UK is because they think, or rather assume that the UK viewing audience is fickle and WANT to see the "drama" of the sinking scenes each week!! ie, if we had it in "real time" sequence then we would have to wait till episode 4 to see the drama of the lifeboats, and the sinking and the iceberg etc... ie, episodes 1, 2, and 3 would all be "character establishing" episodes without any action, and "shock horror" the great British public couldn't possibly handle that!
So instead we have been given this really badly edited, utterly confusing drama that I think is comparable to a jigsaw puzzle with about half of the pieces missing; and we are not allowed to have those missing pieces until episode 4, the final episode, by which time we have probably got so bored with it that we have switched over. I have actually had to record each episode onto my Vision Box and I have to keep re-winding and going over it again and again to try to understand it!!!!
Last Sunday with Episode 3, I watched the whole thing, and then I had to watch it again to understand it, and kept rewinding it when something didn't make much sense! I still don't know what "Mrs second Class" is arguing about with "Mrs First Class" at the bottom of the stairs after the ship has hit the iceburg and they are all trying to get their jewels from the ships safe?? She is certainly mad about something?? But what???
And the unshaven scruffy guy who keeps whispering something into Mrs Third Class's ear was revealed on Episode 3 (at long long last!!) but because he had such a thick accent I couldn't understand what he said, even after four rewinds!!!
Also, the family travelling 3rd class, (the electrician guy who was installing all the lights in the 1st class dining room in episode 2... Why was there all that fuss about him not being allowed be in the same cabin as his wife and daughters?? 3rd class was NOT FULL on the Titanic so surely they could have found a cabin for all six without the silly drama of him having to do the "stowaway" routine and smuggle all of his family into one cabin! That was a bit of a silly storyline that went absolutely nowhere!!
And how many more times have we got to see Miss Dorothy Gibson playing cards with the 1st class gents!!
Anyway, I would like to see this Mini-series edited properly!!!! I don't want to keep seeing the same scenes repeated time and time again... I will only buy it on DVD if they re-edit it seamlessly from the beginning to end so it flows like a proper story in "real time" instead of this mish mash of flashbacks.
How on earth it could possibly be marketed on DVD in its current confusing format is beyond me? Such a wasted opportunity what with the fairly decent sets and the top ranking actors and actresses etc.
If there is anyone out there who could possibly edit it for me into a semblence of sense and send me a copy then I would be really greatful...
I have had the same feelings, emjmb. Even worse because I didn't realize it was on because it was on a prime time network, ABC, rather than PBS or BBCA or even History channel which is where I expected it to be and they usually are. I suppose the networks want in on all the success that Downton Abbey brought to PBS which carried it and co produced it. I wish it had been the same here. So, I had to contend with the 4 part multiple reruns of scenes and commercials jammed back in online even. I hadn't DVR'd due to not knowing ahead. You couldn't FF or Rewind on the online ABC site either, it wasn't working well at all.
I was so upset with it even though it seemed rather good, but the continual repeats and commercial breaks with the same commercials hitting you over the head every time (I will never buy a Nissan after those attempted brainwashing ads over and over again and the volume was so high I had to mute it when they were on).
I would like to see the chronological one but after this experience, I don't know it I want to go through this again, and I was really looking forward to it being a big Julian Fellowes fan since Gosford Park.

shareI am fascinated to learn that so many countries are showing the series in a chronological order which must make everything much clearer and more logical! I am watching it on YES Cable in Israel, in English with subtitles, and the flashback version is quite complicated even for someone like me whose native language is English.
All in all I think that it is very well made, good acting overall and gives a very realistic account of what must have happened.
I too would like to see it in English and chronological order.
