ABC Should have just bought the rights to air the 1997 version

Probably would have cost 1/3 what it took to make this turd

This was a very good movie, written by a very good script writer, who is knowledgable about the period that he writes!!!

Nah, I think it sucked. They should have aired anything but this. The 1997 film, the 1958 film, the 1953 film, the Curiosity special, anything.

No, I think Julien Fellowes' version was pretty good.

Anyway, even if I did think that it sucked, I would have still been glad that it had been made. Ever since James Cameron made his movie back in '97, almost every time the Titanic is brought up, either in normal day to day discussion, or in the media, his movie is almost always referenced in some way.

So, it was good that another film writer took the tragedy on, regardless if it were good or bad.

Even after Julian Fellowes' version, whenever Titanic is brought up, the first one that comes to mind will STILL be James Cameron's film.

Fellowes should just be glad that this mini-series is being largely swept under the rug and focus on Downton Abbey instead.

reply

Not for me. When Titanic comes up the first film that pops into my mind is A Night to Remember. The Walter Lord fact based version will always be the most superior in my mind unless someone else comes along that sees there is plenty of dramatic potential in the real life people on board without having to make up a bunch of fictionalized nonsense to pad it out.

With all that was going on that night there really is no need for lovers being chased by jilted lovers or crazed gunmen.

That is one nutty hospital.

Agreed!!! If there is just one movie that should represent the tragedy, it should be ANTR. Not James Cameron's film.

I never liked Cameron's version so I've thoroughly enjoyed this version and I'm glad Fellowes made it as a lovely tribute. ANTR is great, but, it's nice to have something new and pretty decent for the anniversary

I'm glad that Jordan Carrington Colby are not the only ones who liked Fellowes version. To be honest with you, I don't even understand all the negative reviews this most recent film version is getting. Admittedly, he shouldn't have kept showing & reshowing the ship hitting the iceberg & the subsequent sinking(instead, show different scenes with the different characters & their reactions all in one go), but, other than that, he did as well with this production as he did with Downton Abbey & Gosford Park.

I enjoyed this version and will buy the DVD as soon as it's available because I missed the first two episodes. It was good to see the tale told from the point of view of the staff and the third and steerage class passengers whose story has largely been neglected, and I found the interpersonal dramas of these passaengers at least as interesting as those among the upperclass passengers in fist and second class. I was really hoping Paolo and Annie would both survive, but alas! only Annie did.

reply

I would have liked to spend more time with the characters as I liked them and less time reusing the same scenes, but, I really liked it and have bought the dvd and pre ordered the linear version on the French site

I have a feeling with the 3D re-release still in theatres, even if they wanted the 1997 Cameron movie, it wouldn't have been available.

reply

I agree. There's no way Cameron would have sold the rights to a network because the airing would have competed with the rerelease in 3D. He's very saavy and he plans these types of things.

reply

Funnily enough, I was wrong. WTN, I think, is airing the Cameron movie tonight.

reply

They should just have shown ANTR...

Would have been almost free, and 3000 times better.

reply

"They should have just shown ANTR..."

It was shown on TV last night.

1. ABC didn't make the miniseries...they just got the rights to air it.

2. They wouldn't have been able to get the rights of the '97 version and you'd realize this if you looked into it all (or thought about it for a second). Cameron's Titanic won't be airing on TV, it's currently pulled from Netflix and is now suddenly hard to find new on DVD or rent...because they re-released it in theatres and want to make sure people that want to see it see it in theatres.

It wouldn't make sense to rerelease it and then give it off on TV

reply

They did, though - my fiancee and I watched about two hours of it on WTN up here in Canada in high definition last night (we missed the middle for Game of Thrones and the Borgias).

reply

Canada =/= United States

Considering the U.S. is where the Titanic threatre re-release was where it was going to make money.
