I have 30 minutes left in the film, and I agree. Frankly Hunt's performance is noteworthy only for the nudity (which doesn't really "stretch" an actor, at least not this time), and the awful inconsistency of the Boston accent she did. Hawkes' role was considerably more challenging.

Hawkes' omission was the biggest disappointment of the year. I think the fact that Mark didn't move of his own free will probably caused some voters to think of the performance as just 'talking' and not 'acting'. Of course, because Phoenix gets to pound the $hit out of a couple of people and demolish a prison toilet bowl, he's in like Flynn.

Biggest disappointment of the year was Ben Affleck as Director for Argo. But then Hawkes would be 2nd for me. I just finished this movie and I was in tears. He was phenomenal. As was Helen Hunt. They were both Oscar worthy. I loved this movie.

I agree. The only time she had a Boston accent was when she said his name. She was good, but he was excellent.

Hunt was very solid. But so was the entire cast. Hunt doesn't stand out from the others. Hawkes on the other hand was so different from his other roles. Hawkes, not Hunt deserved the oscar nomination.

Both of them did. Even though Hawkes was better than Hunt, Hawkes' category was tougher this year. I wish Denzel was left out, he was so bad in Flight, not to mention Hugh Jackman in that piece of crap movie that should not be named. Pheonix and Hawkes were my favorite male performances this year. And I am still shocked that Hawkes was the one left out.

Hugh was phenomenal.His physical transformation and multi-layred performance earned him his nomination.Everyone nominated deserved their spot.

Hawkes certainly deserved a nomination. He's superb. Hunt is also very good and deserved her nomination - although she's clearly in the wrong category. How can one consider Hunt a supporting actress while Jennifer Lawrence is considered a lead?

Sadly my two favourite leading male performances of the year (from what I've seen so far), Hawkes and - better still - Jean-Louis Trintignant in Amour were not nominated, while their female co-stars (also both thoroughly deserving, and I really hope Emmanuelle Riva comes through in her category) were.

Both deserved one. Great script, great actors and well directed.

However, if I HAD to choose between the two it would be Hawkes who I think has proven himself as a great American actor up there with Day-Lewis, Penn, DeNiro (when he was good) and any other top class actors.

Disagree. Hawkes was noteworthy largely due to his bedridden acting. Of course, he was sensitive and vulnerable in that role.

Helen Hunt was incredibly natural and effortless. It's like she was meant to be. The nudity does not evoke any form of lewdness but her part definitely helps Hawkes character to achieve acting orgasm.

I disagree. Both Helen Hunt and Hawkes gave stellar performances. Just finished the movie...brought me to tears at times.

I actually disagree. I think, for sure, Hawkes deserved a nomination, but I wouldn't say that Helen Hunt didn't deserve one as well. I thought she performed beautifully.

As was mentioned, I liked that how she portrayed the character wasn't an obvious reach for a nom. Sometimes, I can feel an actor gunning for that award and it sort of ruins things for me. I like understated performances just as much as outwardly emotionally harrowing ones and sometimes, I find that those are even more difficult to pull off.
