anti Christian drivel

and that's that.

reply

Otherwise known as truth.

reply

If you mean, as opposed to substantive anti-Christian attacks, I couldn't agree more.

The movie could have gone backwards in time, starting with the church abuse scandal, done a bit about the Christian roots of homophobia, had a chapter on the inadequate Vatican response to the Holocaust, taken a big leap back in time to the Inquisition and then the Crusades, and finished by examining the anti-Semitic lies in the Gospels (which have essentially been acknowledged by the Church, i.e., for "the Jews" please read "an unfortunate minority of Jews," although whether even that is historically accurate is subject to debate) and then drawing a direct path from them to the aforementioned Holocaust.

That the movie passed over all that and only showed us a priest who warm-heartedly decided that he could not believe in a God who would condemn Mark's plan for surrogate sex, and portrayed a character whose Catholic faith was so important to him (even if his therapist believed it contributed to his sexual anxiety) -- in terms of anti-Christian attacks, it's beyond lame.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

reply

Decent reply, good sir! But i guess, point is amiss...
Lame attack is still an attack - correct?

reply

Em - that would be a bit outside the scope of this movie, don't you think? It may all be true, but most priests are likely good people, and a LOT more open-minded than they present themselves.
(and I am very anti-organized religion!)

reply

The catholic scandal is not an "anti Christian" attack seeing as how christianity teaches sexual immorality is wrong. Youre obviously agreeing with christian teaching but mistakingly confusing the wrong these priests did with Christianity. You say it is wrong and so does the Christian teaching they're disobeying. As far as your claim of "homophobia", thinking homosexuality is wrong shows no "phobia" or hatred any more than thinking lying is wrong. Why are so many atheists blinded by political indoctrination?

reply

Ill replace the word "atheist" with "anti theist". An atheist is sensible and respectful while an anti theist is a hateful bigot who is intolerant of those who don't believe the same.

reply

An atheist is sensible and respectful while an anti theist is a hateful bigot who is intolerant of those who don't believe the same.

Truest and most sensible comment I've read on these boards in a long time.

These so-called atheists who rabidly attack the religious (usually Christians) for their narrow-mindedness and/or self-righteousness really chap my ass. How can they not see that this is exactly the behavior they criticize in other?

BTW, I'm agnostic myself, for what it's worth.

reply

I probably have as much contempt for the new atheists as you do, but I think you've got them backwards. Their anti-theistic arguments are dead on. It's their arrogant and intolerant generalization from anti-theism (opposing one specific concept of God) to atheism (opposing not just any concept of God, but everything spiritual and nonmaterial) that is narrow-minded and self-righteous.

Let me list the six worst and most damaging ideas that human beings have ever had.

1. Some books written by humans are in fact written or dictated by God and have absolute truth and authority.

1a. If your book disagrees with mine, mine is right and yours is wrong, and it's appropriate to take action to make you believe in my book. (Or, kill you, or regard you as a tool of evil, or whatever.)

2. God is omnipotent and has a plan for everything, so that he chooses who lives or dies (and he chose our book to be the right one). Everything that happens is something the supreme being of the universe intended to happen.

3. Human beings are inherently sinful. (WTF? We are inherently altruistic but imperfect. You can make a stronger argument that we are inherently incompetent, since the average person does much more screwing up of things than sinful things. This is, BTW, an invention of Paul's based on a reading of the Bible that contradicts the teachings of 500 years of thought by Bible scholars vastly more educated than he -- and who were actually reading the Bible in its original language, as he was not.)

4. It's belief in the right version of God (see 1a) that will get you into a favorable afterlife, not the quality of your acts as a human being.

4a. Faith is therefore more important than reason; reason is dangerous because it will get you doubting faith.

You will note that 1 and 2 are pretty much the definition of theism, while 3 and 4 are the two defining doctrines of Christianity. Which of course have nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus in the least.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you, Eric. You made an admission some weeks back replying to a poster's unkind remark. Suffice to say, it brought Oliver Sacks research to mind and touched my Texas heart.

Eric, you must be absolutely jubilant over the upcoming film detailing the Boston Archdiocese. Maybe they'll let you be an extra.

Do not misunderstand me. My beliefs are not to be confused with movement atheism.

That movement and I have nothing to say to each other.

Brilliant touch! 

reply

I don't think there is anything anti-Christian about this film at all. If anything it was pro-Christian.

reply

Agreed. The priest was shown in a very favorable light.

reply

I thought so too. He struggled with the fact that Mark as an unmarried man was so hungry for sex, but yet he also knew that Mark was unlikely to ever get married, so he reluctantly went along with the plan because he was compassionate.

Christians understand that we all fall short. A pastor or priest might express empathy for a sinner, or offer a pathway to redemption. But for a Catholic priest to condone an activity that is in blatant contradiction of church dogma, and to ask its blessing in the name of Jesus -- that's a ridiculous scenario to create. You don't have to be Catholic or even respect Catholicism to see that this is an author's wishful thinking and not credible drama.

The film seems to be asking that it be taken seriously, but it doesn't rise above cheap shots and titillation. That's dishonest. It would have been more respectable to just ditch the William H. Macy character and make some good old-fashioned unpretentious porn.

I agree with you on that. There is a lot of that in film. Unrealistic wishful thinking coloring portrayals that are not likely in reality.

Note to Christians - please keep your own colleagues in line; apparently, some of them want everything to be all-or-nothing. They're making all the rest of you look bad and it's your responsibility to do something about that, not ours.

You have no idea how much patience and tolerance has been extended to you already.

Stop being so ungrateful.

I'm not feeling it. Kind of like the missionaries, doctors, nurses and aid workers who are being tortured, set afire, and beheaded everyday.

reply

Yeah, because responding to a lazy little piece of christian propaganda with fairly mild remarks is totally equivalent to horrific war crimes.

You may continue your derailing false equivalents elsewhere.

I know how particular you are about grammar, usage, and editing, so I thought I'd point out that "Christian" is a proper noun and as such, is required to be capitalized. I'm sure it was just a typo. ;D

And while your permission is appreciated, I think I'll just "continue" wherever I feel like it.

Well. This has been tried several times, in several different ways. To understate a point.

Thanks for coming out.

Actually, yes it has.

Manspalian? How do u know i'm a man? Or is ur phony white savior ass assuming it? So ur against racism but have no problem being a sexist. Wow way to show ur hypocracy there ms feminazi white girl. Anyway u can dismiss what I say all u like because the truth clearly hurts and ur intellectually racist mindset doesn't like hearing a poc tell it like it is.

No one has any way of discerning what your identity is. So, no offense, but you sound like one of those white dudes who pretend to be a poc so that they can undermine the credibility of that community.

And if you're a white woman, I have no problem calling you out on your own racism/sexism.

Nor do I - but you enjoy a level of safety by dint of your male privilege - which I do not.

I'm not inclined to compromise my safety in order to prove a point to you. Oh wait, I think I just did.

I'm also not a hypocrite like u either.

I highly doubt that politely declining to provide more personal information to a stranger who cannot be respectful in even virtual spaces (including using rape as a peripheral threat), demonstrates any level of hypocrisy on my part.

It proves it on yours, however.

Check your privilege.

Sure. Because your ancestors raped men and women on an equal basis.
One can see right through you.

and that we asians were and soon will be again the dominant race on this planet.

Well, that's a matter of opinion isn't it. Most ppl just want to pay their bills and give their kids a better life than they had. And that includes Muslims. Quit trying to make everyone see your people as a menace.

**Have an A1 day**

I could care less what you see Asians or Muslims as cause you white western peoples population is going into terminal decline. So such opinions won't even be relevant for much longer. Good riddence.

And I'm not asking you to care what I see.

The question is whether or not you think you should care about the consistency of your own argument(s).

Never mind me; your rar-rar caveman routine is impressing no one else. Nor are your borderline threats.

Your fantasy of the Muslim apocalypse takeover. Way to go with the fear-mongering. Threats don't need to work on me in order for me to know when someone's making them.

**Have an A1 day**

I never once mention Muslim take over. I said decline of western civilization and the rise of Asian nations. And just because half of all Asian nations happen to be Muslim doesn't mean i want this fantasy religious Jihad you claim i brought up.

And the fear of Asia's rise is on your people. You whites can learn to deal with the fact that you ain't king turds of s**t mountain anymore and accept there will be stark changes to how things will be done in the future world. Or your people can all piss off to another planet or something. Either way good riddance to that man hating celeb worshipping god less cess pool crap stained civilization called the white west.

I'm still reserving judgement on his religious status, though. It's not unheard-of for trolls to mask themselves as Muslims (or other various identities) in order to provoke and/or manufacture hatred against/between, groups. He's just hitting too many stereotypical notes to take him at face value. YMMV, of course.

But my largesse in giving him the benefit of the doubt is not going to last forever.
