Question about how long it has aired

Did it really air its first episode in 2012 and its last in 2016 (these are the dates listed by imdb)? If so, why were 2 seasons spread out over 4-5 years?

They split up the seasons, so it only aired ten episodes at a time instead of twenty.

To this day I am so glad I came into this show late (March 2015) so that I didn't have to suffer through most of that.

I started, and watched, the entire show during september 2016. So damn intense!
