Did not get it

I just finished watching this and...... what a waste of my life. I do not understand how the police did not realise she was murdered, why Mike & Billy teamed up or why Katie was smiling at the end. Extremely unimpressed.

Can anybody help?

Mike and Dennis teamed up to scare Missy. Mike wanted her but she chose Dennis and he wanted to make her pay.

Dennis just wanted to scare her away by being as crazy as she was. But Dennis really wanted to kill her.

They made it look like an accident and by telling the police Missy "predicted" her own death, they assumed she was really planning suicide and she had a history of mental illness.

I'm not quite sure why Katie smiled at the end. Possibly because she realised what Mike had done and was pleased he stood up to her and she really didn't like Missy.

I think Katie also felt that Mike left her the memory card as a sign that he trusted her completely, which is part of why she was happy at the end.

I think Mike was really pissed that Dennis killed her and STILL was lucky enough to get off. His reputation may be a little ruined for a bit but ultimately, there was no reason in his finace's eyes to break up with him....and the bad press would probably only suspend him from the team. So it was like Mike was finally standing up to Missy to scare her. Him and Dennis planned it because Dennis wanted to her scare her out of stalking him and trying to ruin his life. Mike thought he was finally standing up and doing something about how Missy treated him, which he was but Dennis STILL won. Because ultimately Mike lost Missy, who he still loved, was just mad at, and Dennis had intention to kill and did it.

Mike HAD to hide the footage even though he wanted Dennis to go down for this more than anything. But it would show that he was basically in on it and would probably be tried for second degree murder.

He hid it in that box, and when he said "It says What would it take for you to kill someone?" that was him just being his English lit, theater emo dramatic self making a metaphor of the entire night and that last "truth" card.

Katie wasn't meeting anyone, she was waiting for a cab. She was smiling because she hated Missy and Missy was finally out of her life. And smiling because she was this type A student who had one night of really bad stuff happen, and got the thrill of it all without getting in trouble. She was also smiling because Mike gave her the box with the hidden footage, which was showing her he trusted her with it. And she has strong feelings for him so Missy being gone and feeling trusted by him felt good to her. She hadn't watched the footage yet so she wasn't smiling because she knew for certain Mike stood up to her and turned on Missy. Some people are saying that which makes no sense, because she saw the card, not the footage. Also, and this is a theory that can be interpreted by everyone however they please, it leaves it open to speculation that she was smiling because even though Mike trusted her----she now literally has all the power over both Dennis and Mike, who she has reasons to be angry at both for. And could easily bring that footage to the police if she decided. So overall, she was just finally feeling free of her jealousy of Missy, kind of exhilarated of a crazy night and shes going home with no charges for anything at all, and for once she has the power--not Mike, or her parents who put a ton of pressure on her to be the perfect student, or Dennis who tried to hook up with her thinking he could just take whatever he wants, she felt pressured her whole life and trapped like she was explaining to the Detective. And now all of a sudden she had power over two people's lives. Who knows if she would actually turn them in but that's totally part of why she was smiling.
