PG? Really?

I almost didn't take my 3-year-old to see this because it was rated PG. I'm glad I ignored the rating, because the film was wonderful, and the rating is completely unwarranted. There are a few mildly scary scenes. As far as I can tell, the rating is mostly because someone smokes a pipe at one point (I don't even remember when) and there's a sign that says "FEIC OFF! NO HUMANS." Big whoop, MPAA.

Long story short, go ahead and take your small children to see it.

I think it's also because dad hangs out in a bar and is seen with a beer in front of him? I totally agree though. This should be a G rated movie. My 3 year old loved it and my husband and I didn't see anything we considered to be offensive or problematic.

That wouldn't surprise me. The MPAA is really stupid sometimes. I'm surprised they didn't slap Princess Kaguya with an R rating because of the "nudity".

"OMG a nursing mother! Hide your children!!!"

reply

Totally agree. My 3 year old and 6 year old girls loved this film.

Agreed also. Although My girls are 5 and 7 and the eldest made a few excuses to leave the room when there were scary parts. A couple of the sad scenes (going with grandma and the mother leaving at the end) left me in tears, and when i looked over at my 5yo she was all red eyed and tears streaming down! Which I have never seen her do. It was a beautiful moment but also a little sad 😐.

All in all it was a wonderful movie that goes a little deeper than most kids movies these days.

I know it can be scary but there are G rated films with smoking and bars in the old days. I was surprised they didn't get a PG but this and Kaguya should be rated G.

I thought it was more about the sad parts, mum dying, little girl getting sick, being sent to stay at grandmas...
One little girl at the cinema where we were left because she got too upset!
Although a lot of it might go over a 3 year olds head....

The ratings are just guidelines, not really hard and fast rules. Parents are the ones who get to decide what their kids watch, not some MPAA board.

Can't stop the signal.

The main reasons for this being rated PG by the BBFC is probably for various scenes of imitable behaviour, things that might be copied by small children who don't know better.

In the film a character is seen removing a life jacket before jumping from a small boat into open sea. There are a few scenes where children spend a dangerous amount of time underwater. Also they ride a dog at one point.

These kinds of scenes are what pushes the film out of the U rating. It's not always simply about scary scenes.
