This or Gran Hotel?

Which is better? Those two caught my attention, but i'm not really a fan of period dramas of these types. Are they really THAT good like some people say? I have zero interest in Downton Abbey, so i want to know if they are superior and what should i watch. I want something more like Mad Men: beautiful, mature, smart/complex, great characters, and high quality. Not just a soap opera (culebrón,telenovela) disguised as a period drama tv series. Something without many ridiculous moments.

I understand there aren't many GREAT tv series from Spain, but i hope i can get really good titles.
I heard Polseres Vermelles is very nice but i'm not interested in something like that.

You can suggest me any great series from outside of the US and UK.

No question this is better, THOUGH - that said. Grand Hotel has 67 episodes and each one ends in complete suspense to the next one! Both of these series have very high production values - the sets, the acting, everything!

I think though that the subject matter is what puts this far over the top of Grand Hotel. GH while definitely great has the same old novela topics - forbidden love interest, character manipulation, etc etc etc - while this basically centers around the beginnings of WW2, the Franco regime and political maneuverings - ALL while having forbidden love, etc etc etc!

This one is better definetly.

This is heads and shoulders above Gran Hotel. Gran Hotel was amusing, this show was gripping and addictive as crack.

Gran Hotel and Velvet are romantic, entertaining fun series with excellent casts.
What sets this series apart is its intense production values, intrigue, and historical authenticity! It is obvious that no expense was spared for the lush settings, antique cars, furniture, and costumes! The original score by Spanish composer,Cesar Benito is quite spectacular! It is the exciting experience of following the journey of a fascinating character who evolves into a strong heroine.Adriana Ugarte is a revelation in her role as Sira!
The series has deservedly received numerous accolades and awards and is currently being seen in countries around the globe .....with translated subtitles in many languages!
