'Mark Harmon as we've never seen him before'

... as quoted from the previews on TV.

based solely on the previews, having not read the books.... Harmon's performance in the previews seems an awful lot like a slightly more vocal, more intense Leroy Jethro Gibbs to me.

reply

as we've never seen him before is miscast as Lucas Davenport.

I'm afraid I agree. Still not sure why they couldn't have gone younger with the role. I could even see somebody like Patrick Wilson in the role (and he's not that big of a name not to do a series of TV movies like this).

Seeing as Harmon is also the executive producer, a recasting of the part doesn't seem likely if they decided to do another (since IIRC USA owns the rights to all the Davenport books).

I didn't pass any judgements prior to watching CP (which I am now). The OP is someone correct when he seems like a more intense and tad bit darker than Gibbs. He's not doing a bad job though.

Patrick Wilson though? No way; he doesn't have nearly the screen presence to play Davenport. He'd have been worse than Eriq LaSalle.

You just said that you haven't read the books. I suggest you do so, so you'll see just who Lucas Davenport is. Here's a hint - he's a vocal and intense person.

Tell us how you really feel...

I disagree, but anything I offer would be a matter of opinion.

reply

Lmao You should have waited to see the movie before ranting. Not saying he's perfect, but turns out not to be all that bad. Pretty decent really

I agree and cannot comprehend what motivates someone who savages an performance that he cannot have yet seen.

That said, I thought he did a good job and I enjoyed the movie.

reply

You know, I've never heard of John Sanford nor his series of books, so AFAIC Harmon did a good job playing this police dectective. Whine all you want fanboys, there's a large segment of the viewing public who probably liked this movie just fine.

I watched the east coast feed on HD a while ago, and I'm watching the west coast feed now! The first is "Prey" book I read, and I think both Mark and Tatiana were great as Lucas and Clara.

I respect your opinion and can understand your expression thereof. I'm sure your judgment is excellent in most cases and that you are of exceptional intelligence and taste. However, you are a bit off the mark here and the truth is that it was a total travesty and an insult to humanity! In the history of both film and literature, nothing this poorly done has been thrust upon the public! Harmon took the character of Lucas and ruined him as if that was his goal throughout this project. It was horrifying and at times I was in tears at what I was witnessing. Whoever the woman was who played Clara was like someone from very bad community dinner theater. She should never be allowed near a soundstage again so she is not inflicted on a wide audience! I began my viewing of this with some trepedation but with my typically open mind when all I know about the film is it stars a truly horrendous actor. Harmon outdid himself, however, and was uniquely hideous in this terribly written and nightmarishly directed USA atomic bomb! What saddens me so deeply is that USA will repeat this masterpiece constantly and waste air time that could be devoted to showcasing the always superb Law and Order: Criminal Intent episodes featuring two of the greatest actors of our time, Vincent D'Onofrio and the lovely Kathryn Erbe. Instead of elevating the taste of audiences and exposing them to artful performances of true genius, the subjection of viewers to more of Harmon's ludicrous lack of talent will go on without end! I feel violated by what those involved with this film have done to the novel and can never forgive Mark Harmon for ever deciding to become what he believes is an actor!

I would say from your statements alone that you went into this movie with a bias against Mark Harmon playing this or any other role. I would say USA is doing a fine job in what they play and the fact is as they always say, if you do not like it you can change the channel.

LOL your truth does not equal THE truth. I would say nice try, but it really fell quite short.

I don't think the movie was as awful as some on here have made it out to be. There were problems, yes, but not catastrophes.

Harmon's problems were ego and typecasting. He executive produced a book he'd been dying to make for years, so he cast himself in the lead role. Unfortunately, this wasn't Clint Eastwood maturing into the lead for "Unforgiven." This was a role increasingly in Harmon's rear view mirror as he matured. Second, because of the phenomenal success of "NCIS," Harmon can't play a cop or detective without invoking thoughts of Gibbs. It would be like Vincent D'Onofrio trying to create another cop character or playing a schizophrenic without people thinking of Goren.

The only other real disappointment is that the movie pales in comparison to a lot of the shows that appear on USA Network. It's hard to put a finger on, but the movie feels more like an LMN offering instead of something on par with "Covert Affairs" or even "NCIS."
