conan was really cruel to jack macbryer.. however u spell that

i really felt bad for jack

F#ck you! and your Eyebrows- Mr. White

reply

They're obviously good friends, and Jack is just acting offended.

reply

yeah, in the interview included in the DVD he talks about how that's their shtick and they've done it for years. they're both just so good at it that people think he's really being a dick to him. he said even his staff used to think that. but that's just their thing. nothing mean spirited about it.

reply

Plus, I noticed that when he really started laying into him, everyone started to leave. I think he did it so people just just LEAVE. I'm sure Jack (my wife and I just call him Kenneth)knew what he was doing.

uhm....lol?
oh so its funny to be treated like an idiot?
no that was bullying.

reply

Yeah, it's unheard of for friends to make mean spirited jokes at each other. Teasing never happens between friends, especially those who have known each other for a long time. He was so out of line.

He's just joking. Friends tease each other. Also, Jack McBrayer makes a career out of playing a "southern hick" on 30 Rock as Kenneth. That is his comedic persona. He forfeits his right to be offended by hick jokes when he himself uses those stereotypes in his acting for the purpose of humor. Jack McBrayer willingly plays a character that people laugh at for his southern cliches. If his act is being the happy-go-lucky southern boy that people laugh at, Conan is simply playing into it.

Also, Conan employed Jack McBrayer for many years on his show, so they obviously appreciate each other.

reply

Just because they are friends doesn't mean that the jokes can't go too far. Friends can be mean to each other.

reply

It was bullying if Jack was not in on it. If he was, it's a joke. Apparently Jack was in on it, which I didn't know either. Upon my first viewing I also thought Conan went way too far, which is part of the movie. He was freaking out all the time. I'm relieved it was all a joke within a joke.

And what other posters have said is true. Jack's entire career is all about people laughing at him for being a Southern hick idiot. He did it on Late Night for years, and then became Kenneth on 30 Rock. If he views it as bullying, he clearly doesn't mind that much since it's his career choice.

reply

Jack worked on the Late Show for years. That's how Jack got his start. They're good friends. Jack was completely feigning anger at all the hillbilly jokes.

reply

Think about it for one second. Do you really think that Jack would have started doing his little jig if his precious feelings were hurt?

I honestly wonder if anybody who watched this movie has ever watched Conan's show. Everybody who has seen Conan's show knows that he was joking through most of it, and any celebrity or co-worker Conan was "mean" to knows how to take a joke or two.

reply

One might even say that Conan helped make Jack MacBryer famous.

Are you sure about that? Because these people (his co-workers) depend on being in his good graces because otherwise he can fire them. So this isn't people on equal footing joking around. This is a boss "joking" with his staff which might be afraid that if they complain about him he might fire them. Like when he hit that guy in the leg over and over again. It didn't look like the guy enjoyed that or the other people in the room. They all looked very uncomfortable.

reply

It was a joke-within-a-joke. The joke isn't just that Conan's making fun of the hick. The joke is:

Conan makes a little fun of him, then goes too far and hurts Jack's feelings.

But it was a joke; Jack was in on it. They are actors, especially Jack. It's apparently a bit they've done a number of times before. The joke is on US, the audience, who isn't sure what's going on and feels very uncomfortable.

I actually found this to be one of the funniest parts of the movie. I was dying it was so funny how Jack was acting insulted and Conan was just going nuts on him. I figured Conan had him on his show quite a bit and knowing his role on 30 Rock I assumed both comedians were being comedians. Funny stuff.
