Certain scenes do make Conan look pretty bad

I'm a Conan fan. But even I admit some of the scenes in Conan O'Brien Can't Stop make him look pretty bad.

For instance, when Matt, Conan, and Sona are joking around. As Conan starts improvising, not saying anything too important, Matt joins in. Conan stops and puts Matt in his place. "When Mozart plays the 88s, you don't sit on his lap and play chopsticks." I don't know, maybe this is just one of many incidents when Matt has interrupted Conan. But to me, it seems like Matt is just trying to be friendly and join in the fun, while Conan wants the entire spotlight.

Also, Conan's reaction after the meet-and-greets. Yeah, he is nice to meet those people. But consider this: Imagine you are one of them. You meet Conan, shake his hand, get a photo taken, and leave with a big smile on your face. Then, about a year later, you see Conan in a documentary, talking about how he didn't want to meet you and your family/friends.

As for other scenes, yeah, I get Conan's sarcastic humor. I like dry wit as much as the next guy. But Conan admits he turns his feelings into jokes. So when he constantly mocks certain employees, they must know there is at least a little truth in his words.

The mozart comment was a joke. Conan makes jokes all the time. It was funny. Just like when Jack MacBrayer was there and he did all the hillbilly stuff. It was a joke. The people around him understand this.

As for the "meet and greets" I completely sympathize with him. He signed up to do a whirlwind tour, he didn't sign up to meet with people before and after (what seemed to be) every show. He was really nice to the people most of the time. Do you think every celebrity you meet is overjoyed to meet you?

reply

He didn't have to be overjoyed to meet these people. But to bitch about having to meet them in a documentary that they might actually see is a bit harsh.

I saw the movie just yesterday. I agree that it would be weird to be one of those folks meeting him, and then having him complain about it. I don't know why he didn't limit the number of people coming in, before the tour! How could he not know. He should have known and handled this ahead of time, so that when he meets his dancer's mom, for example, he could have given her some attention instead of it looking after the fact that he hated meeting everyone. And, of course it was edited to look like that, as he was gracious with people that he met.

I felt sorry for him for a second, because of his voice and exhaustion, but then I realized that I could happily press the flesh for thirty million dollars or whatever he has. It's kind of hard to feel bad for the poor rich schmuck. Also like I said he could have controlled all that meet and greet ahead of time, in a way that didn't make him look bad.

I love Conan though! Didn't love this movie.

I don't think they make him look bad, I think they make him look HUMAN. I saw Conan's show in Toronto, and as I was leaving I called my dad to let him know how the show was. I absolutely ADORE Conan O'Brien..I have for almost 10 years. My dad asked me why I wasn't sticking around Massey Hall (the venue) to try and meet Conan, and I remember saying "I don't want to bug him. He's a person, too, and he's probably exhausted."

It must get really annoying having a million people come into your dressing room after a show and want to meet you and chat with you, when you're exhausted and missing your kids and wife. I didn't think he was a dick at all, I think he did much better than most people would.

And if he had said what he said in private then no one would complain about it. But he said it in a setting where he knew that those people that he was talking about might actually see it. That was kind of *beep* thing to do.

I completely understood his point when it came to meeting that family or whoever they were at that one show. He wasn't being unfriendly at all, rather he had just performed an entire show and didn't even get 5 minutes to himself after the show ended before he ended up being thrown out in front of a dozen people to meet. I realize as a celebrity you should get used to that but at the same time it still must get tiring after being up on stage for 2-3 hours straight and before you can even sit down you're invaded by an entire legion of strangers who want to chat you up.

I liked him... before I saw this movie.

He comes off as an entitled, insufferable man/baby. He sucks.

reply

i agree. i liked conan before i saw this movie. he seems like a prick and cries the whole time and belittles people. got about 50 minutes in and turned it off. the movie sucked, the music sucked, conan sucked.

reply

Totally agree. He comes across as a total prick, bitter and absolutely self-centered. Every now and then he realizes how whiney he sounds and tries to make fun of it, but too late.

It's especially the continuous belittling of people that's totally unforgivable. The way he treats his employees all the time, hitting that guy constantly in the arm, demanding attention from everyone, then silencing them when they try to give him feedback etc. And the scene with Jack McBrayer. It was evident from the beginning that Jack was not enjoying the situation, but Conan just kept going on and on. Yes, Jack does play a hickey character in Conan's show, but it was clear that he wasn't there visiting him as a character and was visibly annoyed by Conan's stupid jokes, which just kept getting worse and worse.

Someone commented here that "that was just a joke, everyone around him knows that, he's just joking". But when the jokes are always at someone else's expense, it's really not very funny. The running Joke with Conan seems to be "you're an *beep* ha ha ha, just a joke... but really, you're a total pathetic prick... ha ha, you know I'm joking... but seriously, you are nowhere near important enough to talk to me, get the *beep* out of my sight... ha ha ha".

I was a Conan fan before as well. So disappointed by this. He probably treated the documentary crew badly as well, because they wanted to make him look this bad in the film.

But he comes off that way on his show already anyway...lol.

I thought that's why people liked him.

One that I thought about as kind of WTF! was when he was hitting that guy in the leg over and over again. I mean what was that? Who does that to someone?

I thought it was stupid and funny. Obviously he was not hurting the person, it was just supposed to MAKE him look like some crazy ass hole. He's not, that was an act.

What I wonder about was why the show was so edited to show him complaining. How could he sign off on this movie?

all artists are tortured and after the public humiliation Conan went through, its amazing to me he would even allow himself to be filmed in this depressive state. Most artists don't want to meet people and none of them are nicey nice 24/7.
