Mailing the briefcase to yourself. Or locking it in a safety deposit box/train station locker and hiding the key.

Yeah I figured as much... Although I do think it would serve the show to clearly define the rules so the viewer can understand what the contestants are up against. Without any context, it's difficult to know why these people do what they do, or don't do. Without knowing all the rules you can't really play along and think about what you would do in each situation.

For instance: Could you hide it in a friends car, and then ask that friend to park their car in another friends garage across town, for a couple of days?

No. The FAQ at ABC.com says that the case must be hidden where it won't move. It also says that the location must be accessible 24 hours a day. A locked locker wouldn't normally be available to the detectives.
