Very disappointed

I loved this show. The first season was very insightful in every episode. The latest episode however was a huge step downward. Lisa has never been so judgmental as she was in this episode. It was almost like her producers came to her and told her she came across as too open minded in the first season and she needed to change that to stay on the air. It almost seemed forced. Watching the deleted scenes on the internet made it all the more obvious.

I'm not sure which the "last episode" was. There have been multiple airings lately . Not sure which was which and which I have or haven't seen. Which was why I was asking you to elaborate as to what topic "the last episode" was about and if you could also give more detail to your original comment as to an opinion you think she gave that was forced. You didn't provide an example.

Sorry, I thought I was clear. I was talking about the first episode of the second season which premiered the day before I posted that message. It was about amateur pornographers. Lisa was less judgemental even with the sex offenders. For example, when the older woman was talking about how her adult daughter didn't approve of what she was doing, you could see it in Lisa's face. Like she thought the lady was stupid for not giving up her new lifestyle.

Well no you weren't clear OP as the OWN has been airing a few episodes.

I saw the episode you're talking about, in fact they're broadcasting it again.

Maybe she was just taken aback a little with this. I didn't see the sex offenders episode but I would imagine they were mostly white middle aged men.

We all have an image in our minds of what a sex offender looks like, and I don't just mean creepy looking guys, but the dad next door.

This show showing a 50yr old woman(who looks every bit of 50 if not 55)doing this and the young couple with the baby making a living off porn is more shocking than
and new for most of us.

reply

Lisa Ling is a young woman. Hearing someone your parents age telling you that they would rather keep their new porn career over family ties may have been a little shocking.

"Lisa Ling is a young woman."

old,
lisa is 39, i doubt her parents are 50.

Well, the first episode (faith healers) has only just started showing here in Australia on Nat Geo and I get the feeling that she is not judgmental enough.

This faith healing BS needs to be judged. They only get away with scamming vulnerable people because others are too afraid to take a stand and say something. There is absolutely nothing to be open minded about when it comes to religious scammers.

If you try these faith healing tricks here in Australia you are going to get called out on it, and possibly charged with a crime, but in America they are just too religious to see through the scam. I think she said 50% of Americans believe that their god can heal people... it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

I watch very little of Australian TV, that is why I pay for satellite TV so I can watch Nat Geo (which airs this Lisa Ling thing) and Discovery a lot. But OK you'll have to explain to me what is so sophisticated about scamming the gullible and sick, and a TV presenter/journalist who actually broke down in tears and prayed for a man who was not healed.

The episode had about 1 minute of Lisa wondering if it was legit before she was back to her teary-eyed self... not much perspective there I'm afraid, just drama for the Oprah crowd. Any other journalist would have tried to get deeper in to this faith healing scam but she was clearly buying in to it way too easily.

BTW, are you religious?

in my opinion, she is not there to break everything down and challenge everyone on their beliefs--she is there to present different sides of an issue/argument/lifestyle/etc. etc. i think she does that very well.

Are you an ass scientist? Cause your ass is blah blah blah...you get the point.

reply

She failed to show different sides of the faith healing scam, and she certainly didn't challenge anyone. Just 1 or 2 minutes of very weak questioning, and most of the questions were Lisa talking to herself/the camera. A good journalist tries to go further. A good journalist does not break down crying and praying in the middle of a story. Lisa Ling is not a good journalist.

reply

I am totally against the faith healing scam, but I didn't think Lisa as buying it at all. What she was upset about was the poor guy who seemed like a good person who did really buy into it. She felt bad that she knew he wasn't going to get what he wanted and she wanted it for him too. She was seeing him as a person instead of just some random number in the mass of people that are involved in this. She wished that he could have what he wanted and prayed for him, but I never got the feeling she was buying into faith healing at all. Btw, I am not religious.

Why are you deleting your replies to me?

i have watched every ep of every season of this show, and i don't think i've ever found her to be judgemental toward anyone. i think this topic may have even been one of the harder ones to stay neutral on, but she did it well. maybe this is a senstitive subject for you?

reply

LOL no it's not a sensitive subject for me but I'll admit that I haven't seen her as judgmental in any other episode. Compared to everything else she has had to deal with (ex. rapists and child molesters) I can't imagine why amateur pornographers would have been one of the harder ones to stay neutral on.

i thought she was very judgemental in the show about the nuns. she was so skeptical about their choices to devote their lives to god.

it wasn't up to her to question why they made their decisions or to wonder if any of them would stay in the religious life.

reply

Yes, it is up to her to question people on their choices. She IS there to question people.

i watched bout 15 minutes of it and i turned it off. Come on now. Showing BDSM as something you have to pay a Mistress for. SO she can beat you and degrade you?

what about the real life D/s couples who live normal lives, but chose to be in a loving and respectful Dominant submissive relationship? i didn't stick around for that, because i know it wasn't there.

Just another show done for the ratings and not to shed light on a real subject.

shame on Lisa Ling and Oprah for showing it on her channel.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

reply

Actually, they showed two loving couples who both live normal lives and are in respectful dominant-submissive relationships. Payig someone is an option too, so I don't think they are wrong to show that too.

"Everybody lies.."

reply

No they wwren't wrong, but i think they should of showed that later on in the show. i bet that a lot of people who have no experience with BDSM saw that segment shook their heads and turned it off. Saying to each oth4er. "See they really are weirdos."

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

reply

I personally would have looked at that and went, this is extreme, wow... I'm a fly on the wall, and then been pleasantly surprised but the couple shown later. I personally hate docs that throw 8 lives in your face in the first 5 minutes and take each story into 30 second segments, just because they don't expect me to be able to be interested in one story at a time. I think it's fine to show me something extreme and then step back and show me something closer to home. It is a wake up call to my own misconceptions. I think most people don't expect the 2nd story, so it's a twist. If you liked the 6th Sense, then you like those twists, and many do. If one will turn on a tv show knowing it is about BDSM and are turned off by the paid mistress, then what were they thinking in the first place? Do they want an account of reality or do they want to see just one viewpoint/scenario? In real life, there are mistresses of pain and there is nothing wrong with showing it and there is no golden rule to the order of subjects in a documentary. Sit back and enjoy the doc you chose. At least try to enjoy the flow of it, or go watch youtube clips.

In regard to the OP- This board isn't for fans that watch live airings religiously. Many people will come to the posts years later, so be clear with your point or don't bother.
